Myer Scores Big Win At Chateau
Lansing, MN – July 14 (By: Todd Narveson) — After early morning showers fell in the area, it turned out to be a beautiful night for a special Thursday night race program at Chateau Raceway. The Casey’s General Stores USMTS Modifieds Powered By Swan Energy were on hand along with the first appearance of the USRA B-Modified Ironman Series and Chateau Pure Stocks.
At intermission there was an auction of a door and quarter panel off of Zack Vanderbeek’s USMTS modified that was sporting a pink graphics scheme to raise money for the Susan G. Komen 3-Day For The Cure. The effort was headed up by race fan Chris Brown and the Vanderbeek team this season.
Tonight with the help of the racing auctioneer Greg Jensen and drivers Zack Vanderbeek, Kevin Stoa and Joe Wernecke over $2100 was raised through the auction and the passing of the helmets through the crowd.
Kylie Kath inherited the outside pole of the USRA B-Modified main event when Parker Hale was unable to make the call. Hale’s misfortune became Kath’s celebration at the end of the 20-lap feature.
Kath bolted to the lead and pulled away from the pack Jacob Bleess and Jake Timm had a dandy battle for second while Brandon Hare was fourth. Kath was gone up front when Hare challenged Timm for third and they were right on Bleess for second. Hare zipped past Timm on lap 13 and was close to Bleess. Michael Wytaske brought out the caution on lap 14 and that took care of Kath’s huge advantage.
Hare made a slick move on the restart and zoomed past Bleess for second. Timm then spun on lap 16 and the caution returned over the field. Kath took off again, but this time Hare remained close to the leader. On the final lap, Hare took a stab at Kath but came up just short at the line. Bleess had a strong run in third with Matt Lettow fourth and Josh Bonnstetter in fifth after starting sixteenth.
After out of car introductions and the redraw of the top eight passing point drivers, the stage was set for the 40-lap, $2000 to win Wix Filters A-Main for the USMTS Modifieds. Zack Vanderbeek and Tommy Myer led the 25-car pack to the green flag.
Myer tore off from the outside of row one and made it a one-car party up front. Myer was a half-straightaway out front on lap seven. Vanderbeek settled in to second while Corey Dripps was third and Rodney Sanders along with Keith Foss filled out the top five.
Myer was into lapped traffic on lap fifteen, but behind him Dripps was putting pressure on Vanderbeek for second. The races lone caution flew on lap 18 for debris. Myer stormed away again and had a full straightaway advantage when he again entered lapped traffic.
Behind him the battle for second raged on when Dripps really got after Vanderbeek. With five to go, Dripps got to second and pulled away from Vanderbeek. Meanwhile Myer was being held up a bit by the lapped traffic. Dripps closed the gap on the leader when the white flag flew.
Dripps made a dramatic last lap charge but came up a half a car length short at the checkered flag. It was Myer’s first USMTS win for 2011 at one of the tracks where he cut his teeth early in his career. Vanderbeek was third with Rodney Sanders and Keith Foss fourth and fifth.
Racing returns to Friday next week with action in all six classes. There will also be kids rides in their favorite race-cars beginning at 7:00 p.m. sharp.
