Phillips holds off Hughes in Featherlite Fall Jamboree thriller

SPRING VALLEY, Minn. — A snapshot from 2009 shows Jason Hughes beating Terry Phillips to the finish line by a bumper to win the Featherlite Fall Jamboree after a pass in the final turn.

The ending to Saturday night’s feature race at the Deer Creek Speedway during this year’s edition of the undisputed marquee event for the world’s best dirt modified drivers was almost identical except for one slight difference.

A starting field of 34 cars and drivers took the green flag in three-wide formation and – just like two years ago – Phillips took command of the 50-lap main event early on and opened up a decisive advantage over his pursuers.

But his attempt to run away and hide from the pack was thwarted by three caution flags during the first eight laps that kept the field bunched up tight.

Thursday night’s winner Brad Waits followed Phillips to complete the first lap with polesitter Brandon Beckendorf settling into the third spot.

The first caution with two laps down helped Nate Wasmund and Hughes jump into the third and fourth spot on the restart. Hughes got by Wasmund two laps later and then snuck ahead of Waits for second following the restart after a caution on lap 7.

The third and final yellow flag waved with eight laps in the books for a four-car pile-up involving Friday night winner Jason Cummins, Tommy Weder Jr., Steven Whiteaker Jr. and Dereck Ramirez. This time, Jon Tesch made a bold move on the restart to join Phillips and Hughes at the front of the pack.

Just like each of the previous restarts, Phillips powered out to a big lead at the drop of the green flag. He built a half-straight-away cushion over Hughes by lap 15 while Brandon Davis moved into the fourth spot to battle with Tesch.

Phillips encountered his first lapped car on lap 23, and by lap 25 the top four were nose to tail as Phillips was slowed by the thick traffic in front of him.

Just like two years ago, the last half of the race came down to Phillips and Hughes. The pair maneuvered in and out of heavy lapped traffic, racing high and low and everywhere in between with Hughes shadowing Phillips’ every move.

With 40 laps complete, Phillips pulled away to about a four-car-length advantage but Hughes adjusted his preferred line and closed back on the bumper of Phillips’ machine two laps later. With Phillips just slightly missing his mark in the next corner, Hughes pounced on the opportunity and the pair raced underneath the flagstand side by side with Phillips holding the edge by a bumper.

This time, however, Phillips carved a perfect line around the top of the high-banked 3/8-mile clay oval and inched back ahead of Hughes by a car length. Meanwhile, Tesch was riding the extreme high line and had the lead pair within striking distance with five laps to go.

The three veterans raced nose to tail for the next four laps with Hughes trying to find traction underneath Phillips in the corners and Tesch chipping away at their lead.

The white flag waved with Hughes glued to Phillips’ rear bumper and Tesch lurking behind as they entered turn 1 with a clear racetrack in front of them.

Just like two years ago, Hughes made a move to the inside of Phillips as they raced off of the final turn, but this time Phillips would not be denied as he beat Hughes to the line with half of a second to spare.

The win was worth $9,000 to Phillips thanks to a $3,000 winner’s bonus from Hanson Tire Service. It was his third feature win at the Featherlite Fall Jamboree, but his first win in the championship race after winning both preliminary main events last year.

“That was a perfect race track, Phillips said in victory lane. “I just love coming up here. Sometimes things haven’t gone my way, but every once in a while they do, so praise the Lord for that.

“It was a lot of work this weekend, but we just love to come up here. It’s always worth it.”

Perhaps from his disappointment in 2009 or maybe from his more than two decades of racing experience, the second-generation racer didn’t know how close they were but “had a feeling,” he said.

“I started getting tight there at the end. I was just trying not to slide my car too much. Just trying to be careful – probably too careful.”

Hughes, who has three Jamboree trophies in his possession including the last two, settled for the runner-up paycheck of $4,200.

Tesch finished second to Hughes in last year’s Featherlite Fall Jamboree finale, and pocketed $3,200 for his third-place effort Saturday night.

Rookie Brandon Davis recorded an impressive fourth-place finish over the field of more than 100 competitors, and Waits came home in fifth.

Sixth through tenth in the final running order were 20th-starting Jeremy Payne, Ryan Ruter, Tim Donlinger, Ryan Gustin and Wasmund.

Gustin capped off a remarkable performance this season by capturing the 2011 USMTS National Championship, which he clinched after Friday night’s performance. Just like Phillips, it was sweet vindication for ‘The Reaper’ after two straight years of runner-up finishes in the USMTS standings.

“All these guys we race with night in and night out definitely didn’t make it easy on us,” Gustin said. “They’re the best in the business. It’s awesome to win this championship.

His ninth-place finish on Saturday was just the third time during the 18-race Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Championship powered by Swan Energy that Gustin did not wind up in the top-5 at the checkered flag.

“Now we’re gonna go down there and hopefully win that Humboldt race. That’d be all right.”

While the 13th Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree is in the books, seven more nights of racing remain for the USMTS drivers and their teams, beginning with the inaugural King of America Modified Nationals at the Humboldt Speedway in Humboldt, Kan. Slated for Oct. 19-22, the non-points event will pay the winner $15,000 while each of the main event starters will earn at least $1,500.

The 2011 USMTS campaign will conclude with the 5th Annual Texas Winter Nationals, Nov. 17-19 at the Royal Purple Raceway in Baytown, Texas. The season finale at the state-of-the-art facility near Houston will also see the crowning of this year’s Southeast Region champion. Gustin is the current points leader in that region too.
