BLOG: County Line Raceway “Race for the Kids” Feature Event – November 4-5, 2011

The much-anticipated 3rd Annual Victory Junction “Race for the Kids” benefit event was held last weekend at County Line Raceway (CLR) in Elm City, North Carolina. After nearly a year’s worth of effort behind the scenes the stage was set for some of the best racing the East Coast has seen in some time. A-list drivers such as Bart Hartman, Kennie Compton Jr., Nick Hoffman, Randy Hall, Russell Erwin, and Bret Hamilton were present with NASCAR driver and “lover of all things racing” Ken Schrader in attendance. Two dash races were run on Friday with the big money event on Saturday night.

The dash races would give us a hint of things to come as Ken Schrader, Kennie Compton Jr., and Russell Erwin mixed it up at the front of the first 20-lap dash race. Running his typical consistent laps at the bottom, Erwin would pass Schrader then Compton for the impressive $750 win. The second dash race would see Bart Hartman pace the field for several laps with Nick Hoffman chasing close behind in second. On a lap 12 restart, Hoffman dove low beneath Hartman with some contact with Hoffman pulling away. Hoffman drove off to the victory followed by Hartman and 2010 “Race for the Kids” winner “Hurricane” Hank Edwards.

On Saturday, four heats and two consolation races would set the Rapid Red Open Wheel Modified 24 car field for this 30 lap $4200 to win feature. Ken Schrader had fast time that put the pink and white #9 Federated Auto Parts ride on the pole with the #30 of Joe Meadows on the outside of row one. With lap 1 in the books Ken Schrader was out front when the caution came out for #51 Jeffery Tyndall. Back to green with Schrader still out front, #2 Hoffman would jump into second a car length back when the yellow would fly again for #B12 Billy Wilson who spun in 4. Flagman Glenn Upchurch threw the green flag over Ken Schrader who quickly stretched his lead out to at least six car lengths when the yellow would fly yet again on lap 6 for #006 Colton Robinson who spun in turn 2. This was a quick yellow, so back green with Schrader fending off his first real challenge by Nick Hoffman. That challenge would fall short as Hoffman would settle back into 2nd spot. Riding in 3rd, Bart Hartman, Chris Parker and Hank Edwards made up the top 5. Another caution would come out for Billy Wilson in turn 4 on lap 11. Wilson would utilize the new hot pit road on the front stretch while the field lined up to go back green. Schrader held onto his lead over Hoffman when the caution came out again for Colton Roberson. Caution again for a spin in turn 4 by 4th place Chris Parker would made contact with Hank Edwards, resulting in Parker cutting a tire and being towed to the pits. Back to green and Schrader was still out front with about 2 cars separating him from Hoffman. Kyle Strickler (#8) was on the move as he passed #75 Hartman for 3rd. A three car spin in turn 4 would bring out the caution yet again. Track officials quickly removed the debris from turn 4 and we were back green with 11 to go. A five car pile up on the backstretch would bring out yet another yellow flag. Wayne Gray got loose on the backstretch, spinning in front of #01 Vic Vena, #99B Ricky Boahn, #99w Chris Arnold and #12 Greg Brown. Brown was able to continue as the others retreated to the pits. Green again, and Schrader was in the gas quickly coming out of 4 to the start/finish line. He was followed closely by Hoffman, Hartman, Strickler and Russell Erwin who improved twelve positions at this point of the event. With 25 laps complete, Schrader appeared to have his pink #9 Federated Auto Parts open wheel modified on cruise control as he wheeled it under the checkered flag. Schrader was followed by Nick Hoffman and Joe Meadows. Ken brought home the $4200 win, along with the $200 pole award and the half-way leader award bringing his winnings to $4,500! A great event overall for a great cause!
