First Time Winners Take the Checkers
SPRING VALLEY, MN – May 20, 2012: Tonight was the second annual school bus race night with nine area schools participating in the event. Schools on hand included Grand Meadow, Kingsland, Goodhue, LeRoy-Ostrander, Chatfield, St. Ansgar, Pine Island, Immanuel Lutheran and Waseca. Each school was given $100 by Deer Creek Speedway to participate in the event plus a split of the night’s 50/50 drawing at the speedway. Each school was offered the chance to sell tickets to the event with the proceeds going to the school. It is a great way to raise some funds for the area schools that can always use more money for programs.
Randy and Patti Eastvold of Hanson Tire in LeRoy were on hand also and donated $200.00 to the bus that won the feature race and to each driver who won their feature event for the main races.
First feature event of the night saw the Dirt Doctor Trucking WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature event on the speedway with a complete restart the second try saw a three wide race for third as Steve Amundson jumped out to the early lead with Dustin Scott quickly moving into second. Another caution flew on lap four with Amundson leading on the restart followed by Scott. Cody Gardner took over the third spot after restarting the initial restart from the tail of the field. With six down Scott took the lead with Gardner pressuring Amundson for the second spot. Bryan Hernandez worked into fourth followed by Bill Stettner. Ten laps completed before Gardner finally got around Amundson for the second spot with Hernandez now trying to move into third. On lap fourteen Hernandez took over third and Jared Boumeester moved into the top five. A final caution set up a green/white, checker dash to the finish which saw Boumeester move past Amundson for the fourth spot. Scott took home the win followed by Gardner and Hernandez.
Jacob Bleess charged out front on lap one of the Hinz Trucking USRA B-Modified Feature Event with Jerry Young in second. A restart on the completion of lap one saw Dean Hoffman and Jerry Young get together in turn three with both cars leaving the speedway. On the restart Bleess again led with Ben Moudry in second, Kylie Kath and Scott Demmer raced for the third spot ahead of Alex Williamson in fifth. Kath moved into third on lap six and started to gain on Bleess up front. Parker Hale pressured Williamson for the fifth spot. With twelve down Kath was close enough to capitalize on a mistake but Bleess kept his line strong and ran a great race. Bleess moved low to work on a slower car with Kath tried to keep it up top, the move worked for Bleess as he cleared the slower car first and cruised home to his first feature win at the speedway. Kath, Moudry, Demmer and Williamson rounded out the top five.
In the NAPA AutoCare USRA Modifieds Nate Wasmund jumped out front exiting turn two with a bull rush behind him as cars battled for position. Bob Timm and Brad Waits raced for second with joey Jensen in fourth. Brandon Davis was in fifth and then Davis, Jensen and Waits were three wide for the third spot. Davis took the spot with Jensen holding close to him. With nine down Timm was all over the rear bumper of Wasmund but was running the upper groove and his momentum kept him out front. Further back Tim Donlinger and Ryan Ruter raced for the fifth spot with Jason Cummins right behind them keeping pace and looking for an opening. Davis moved low and started gaining on the leaders and on lap thirteen took away the second spot from Timm. Davis kept the hammer down and quickly moved past Wasmund to take the lead on lap fourteen. With seventeen down Donlinger and Cummins were all over Jensen in a battle for fourth with Donlinger taking the spot and Cummins following him through. Davis started working through lapped cars splitting them in a three wide battles as he slowly pulled away from the field. His lead vanished as a caution flew on lap twenty but on the restart Davis held onto the lead and ran it to the finish to take home the win. Behind Davis were Cummins, Donlinger, Timm and Jensen in the top five.
Racing resumes this Saturday with the A&A Electric Southern Minnesota Spring Challenge with the USMTS Modifieds on hand. Also competing will be the WISSOTA Super Stocks and Street Stocks along with the Ironman challenge series for the USRA Stock Cars and b-modifieds.
