Wild weekend of Cincinnati Modified Championship action recapped

The U.S. Race Gear Cincinnati Modified Championship presented by Gabbard’s Mt. Orab Ford this past weekend would see history made. The weekend would produce 3 new winners and see the Goodsleeve Screen printing 4 track challenge completed. Jeremie Bretz. Ted Nobbe and Adam Hamilton would capture their first CMC wins of the season. Joey Kramer would complete the 4 track challenge as he was the first driver to win at all 4 CMC tracks this season.

The action would start at Moler Raceway Park on Friday night. Larry Pickelheimer Jr. could not get around The Bad Fast Chassis car of Jeremie Bretz that are built and sold by Pickelheimer. Following them across the line was Derrick Davis. Both Bretz and Davis use Fast Shocks giving the Fast Shocks company 2 podium finishes. Bretz has been fast all season and was finally able to lockdown his first CMC win.

The action would continue Saturday at Florence Speedway. The 20 lap feature saw a un-familiar #9 in the front row and it wasn’t 2011 track champion Matt Hamilton (he started 3rd) it was the 9n of Batesville, Indiana’s Ted Nobbe. The drop of the green had Nobbe leadfoot his Rocket by Ruhlman pass outside pole sitter Eric Shepherd to take the early lead, with Hamilton 3rd, Billy Vaughan 4th and Pete Holt moving into 5th at the completion of lap (1). The top (5) stayed that way until lap (5) when Vaughan took 3rd from Hamilton and then swiped 2nd from Shepherd on lap (6). only to lose it to Hamilton on lap (8). With all this action once again up front it was easy to miss all the real action going on mid pack as #14 Trent Green, #52t Shawn Tolson, #1* Ryan Morton and the #41 of Kelly Craddock were racing top to bottom and bottom to top swapping positions every lap. Meanwhile Pete Holt then made his run at the lead moving into 2nd on lap (15) pressuring race leader Nobbe, but it would be short lived as Hamilton got by Holt (2) laps later lined up his site on Nobbe with (3) laps to go. Hamilton closed the 2-3 car length lead of Nobbe’s only to give it right back, but on the white flag lap he wasn’t going away and in the last two corners he caught and lead by a nose coming off of turn four. The two were side by side bumping and rubbing with Nobbe on the outside up scraping against the wall and Hamilton low, the two were hammer down and holding on, as the checkers were approaching and a winner yet to be determined. Nobbe found that desperately needed burst of speed to cross the line first by a bumper to claim his 1st Florence Speedway feature win of 2012. The 43 year old Nobbe piloted the Leonard Nobbe Owned, Nobbe Mower Shop, Tact Industries, Stihl Power Tools and Grass Hopper Lawn Mowers sponsored mount with a Zimmerman Racing Engine providing the final push he needed. Finishing 2nd was Hamilton, 3rd was Holt. It was not only Nobbe’s first CMC win but the first for Rocket by Ruhlman chassis.

Meanwhile at Lawrenceburg Speedway on Saturday Night Daryl Herbert would start on the front row alongside defending track champion and current point leader Derek Groomer. Right behind Herbert would be his son in law Chuck Griffis. Both Herbert and Griffis had been fast all night long. At the drop of the green flag, Griffis spun in turn 3 collecting several cars, most notably Michael Englaind who looked to be one of the faster cars in the field. England would not continue, but Griffis would drop to the back and restart. Herbert would battle with Groomer and lead the first 3 laps before Groomer would lead the next 2 laps. Behind the top 2 cars, Adam Hamilton was reeling them both in. Hamilton coming off a runner up finish last time out was able to pass both Herbert and Groomer and pull away. No driver was able to keep up with Hamilton once he got out front. Weasel Rhodes was involved in the first lap crash and came all the way back to finish second Chuck Griffis would fight his way back to third. Hamilton’s first CMC win makes him and his brother Matt the only brother combination to claim CMC wins.

At Bruchcreek Motorsports Complex it was an opposite story of everywhere else in the CMC on this weekend. Instead of a new CMC winner, Joey Kramer showed up and claimed the Goodsleeve Screenprinting 4 track challenge. It only took Kramer 11 races to claim the bonus as he took his 6th CMC win of the year. Also making the feat more amazing was that Kramer scored wins at 3 of the tracks on his first visit to each this season. The track he didn’t win the first feature at was a Lawrenceburg make-up feature where he finished 2nd. He would however come back later in the night to claim the other Feature of the Night. Brushcreek has seen 4 different winners claim features in the 5 races, yet Lightning Chassis is undefeated winning all 5. Following Kramer was Dave Jamison and Jimmy Stricker. Kramer has already laid claim to the first $300 that will be handed out at the seasons end but $4700 in cash and prizes is still on the line. The Modifieds are headliners at 3 of the 4 tracks this week as they are with the American Modified series at
both Moler Raceway Park on Friday and Florence Speedway on Saturday. Also on Saturday they will be the headliner at Lawrenceburg Speedway with the fair. Also on Saturday Brushcreek will host scout night.
