(By: REED MILLER / PENN CAN MEDIA) SUSQUEHANNA, PA- March 24, 2014- The mighty modifieds will take center stage when the gates swing open at Penn Can Speedway on Friday April 18nd with the running of “The Can Opener.” The night will feature modifieds in action in a big thirty five lap feature event paying the winner $1500. Modified teams will draw for heat race starting positions with the top finishers redrawing for the feature event. Last season Grant Hilfiger beat out a very strong field to win “The Can Opener”. A strong field of modifieds is expected for the first of several big events on the 2014 schedule for the modified teams.
Kevin Hartnett, 2013 speedway champion, Billy Thornton, Mike Schane, Dan Pompey, Brian Malcolm, Bob Trapper, Alan Rudalavage, Joey Colsten, and Adam MacGeorge were all strong runners at the speedway and are expected to contend for the win in the big “Can Opener.” The winner of the race will be given a guaranteed starting spot in the 2014 King of the Can race in October.
Joining the modifieds on the opening night of racing will be the 602 sportsman, street stocks, factory stocks, Xcel 600 Modifieds, and four cylinders. The format all other divisions will be the same as the modifieds on this first night. All teams will draw for heat race starting spots and then redraw for the features. The winners of each division on this night will also receive guaranteed starting spots in their races on the King of the Can Weekend in October.
Speedway officials have been hard at work over the off-season with speedway sponsors and are pleased to announce a number of lucrative incentives to teams racing at Penn Can Speedway in 2014. The programs will benefit all racing divisions currently competing at the three eighths mile oval. The speedway has always paid one of the most lucrative purses in the area in all divisions. This will not change for the coming season. The track has also provided a very decent point fund to all the teams racing at the speedway. Over the years speedway management has spread the allotted money out over all divisions.
Penn Can has also distributed the money throughout the top ten. This also will not change in 2014. With the help of speedway sponsors,Al Wilcox and Reed Miller are pleased to announce that the winner of the modified title in 2014 will again this season receive $5000.
Other positions throughout the modified top ten will also be nicely rewarded. The other divisions at Penn Can will also be well compensated in 2014 for making Penn Can their Friday night home track. Both the 602 sportsman division and the street stock division winners will be paid a minimum of $1000 for their championships. The four cylinder, factory stocks, and Xcel modified winners will be guaranteed a minimum of $250 for their titles.
The speedway will also be part of the American Racer Cup for both modified and sportsman teams. The program has some changes from past seasons. In the modified division, race teams will not only be rewarded with the popular tire give-away, they will be part of a state wide completion. The sportsman program for 2014 has also been upgraded and will also feature state wide point system. Early membership bonuses are also available for teams registering early in the modified division. Entry forms are on the speedway web page.
The action starts at the speedway this season with an open test and tune sessions tentatively scheduled for Friday April 11th. This date is listed as tentative because the speedway crew is in the process of reconstructing the backstretch wall with hopes of having everything complete for the opening weeks of racing. Check the speedway web site for all of the updated speedway news.
