The BRP/Hoosier Tire Modified Tour celebrated its fourteenth year of operations by distributing a record amount of cash and contingencies at its annual, family-style, covered dish banquet and awards ceremony. The lion’s share went to “the granddaddy of the BRP Tour,” Rex King, Sr., who chalked up his third consecutive and fifth career point championship. Add in another crown for son Russell, now a budding Late Model star, and it is easy to see why King proclaimed the Modified Tour as “the best thing going.” “We had a few setbacks during the year,” said Modified Tour president, Lou Long, “but overall, we had a successful season.” Indeed, the Big Block circuit completed ten of its scheduled programs, losing two races to the incomplete track renovation at one facility and two other shows to scheduling complications. Despite this, the Modified Tour paid out combined purses in excess of $105,000 over the course of the season. And, thanks to its loyal sponsors, the point fund and other prizes distributed at the awards ceremony topped $65,000. “We presented competitive, entertaining and economical races for our fans, our racers and our promotional partners,” Long added. “The 2012 season promises to be even bigger and better!” The points chase came down to the final event of the year, the Steel City Stampede held at Lernerville Speedway. On the strength of his three feature wins, Kevin Bolland had a mathematical shot at the championship. However, an uncharacteristic poor heat race performance on Bolland’s part, combined with a point-earning preliminary run by King, gave the Ohio veteran enough breathing room to lock up the title by starting the A Main. King was relieved to clinch the title the night before, as he suffered a DNF in the finale when he had a flat tire and, then, a broken power steering belt send him pitside. King’s lone win came at the Sharon Speedway, where he took the Russ King Memorial, a race named in honor of his late father. “I’m tickled,” said King after that win. He picked a perfect time to register a dominant performance, as many friends, family members, neighbors, sponsors and employees were on hand for the gala event. He was somewhat concerned when the number 3 flashed up in second on the scoreboard, as New York invader Chad Brachmann had tracked him down to take the win away the night before at Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway and he did not want to have that happen again. “He was much faster down there in Pittsburgh,” King said of his challenger, but, in the end, it was King’s vast experience at Sharon that made the difference. King earned $4,000 for his point championship and, like all of other drivers in the top twenty in points, his prize package included gift certificates from Ultra-Shield, Big Daddy’s Speed Center and Pietragallo Gordon Alfano Bosick & Raspanti, LLP. Completing his record haul was a Contingency Connection Perfect Attendance Award worth more than $2,000. A total of fourteen perfect Attendance Awards were doled out, along with four Contingency Connection Wild Card Awards

For his runner-up finish, Bolland received a check for $2,500 and a prize package that also included the Fast Axle Top Qualifier Award. Bolland earned that for his six heat wins and fast time at the Russ King Memorial, the only event run under a time trial format in 2011.

Dave Murdick was a model of consistency in 2011, using eight top five finishes to solidify his hold on the other podium spot. His point fund check was $1,500 and he got the second Kirkey Racing Fabrication certificate.

Jeremiah Shingledecker and Rex King, Jr. tied for fourth, each earning $1,055. Shingledecker was the series Hard Charger Award winner, receiving a Bert Hub for the effort. King Jr. was the first of four Bilstein Shocking Performance Award recipients. His came for his first Tour win at Mercer Raceway Park.

Sixth in the standings was the only New Yorker to complete the entire grind, Shannon Whaley. His point fund check was worth $1,040, the most he’d ever earned in Modified racing. He, too, was a Bilstein Shocking Performance Award winner.

Kevin Hoffman finished seventh, good for $1,030 and Frankland Rear Ends gift certificate. Hoffman also received a gag prize, ten pounds of lead for the Flyweight Award, due to coming up light at the scales a few times in 2011.

Mike Turner was eighth in the point standings, earning $1,020. He was named the Most Improved Driver. His award for that was a pair of racing shoes courtesy of RaceQuip.

Chris Haines finished in ninth, receiving $1,010. His prise package also included a Bert Hub.

Rounding out the top ten was Mark Frankhouser. Mark received $1,000. However, he was also named the first ever recipient of the Debbie Oyler Memorial Award for his professionalism and positive attitude. His special prize was a fire suit compliments of RaceQuip.

Tom Mattocks finished just outside the top ten in his first full season on the Tour. His point check was for $790. He also received a set of seat belts from RaceQuip and a gift certificate from R2C Performance Products.

Twelfth was ageless Carl Murdick. At age 75, he completed the entire Tour and received $780. He received the third Bilstein Shocking performance Award.

Shawn Fleeger occupied the lucky thirteenth position, worth $770. He got a Kirkey Racing Fabrication gift certificate, along with the other prizes.

Brian Weaver, a first-time winner on the Tour, placed fourteenth after missing some races due to work commitments in the Binghamton area during the summer flooding. Brian earned $760 and a R2C Performance Products gift certificate. He was one of the Wild Card winners of a Contingency Connection prize package.

Brian Swartzlander, another Wild Card winner, took home $750 and prizes that included an R2C Performance Products certificate. Brian was a Contingency Connection Wild Card winner.

Don Brown placed sixteenth, good for $540, and also received an R2C certificate and RaceQuip gloves.

Brad Rapp placed seventeenth, despite starting the year strongly. His title hopes were dashed in a wreck at PPMS, which knocked him out of the next race at Tri-City Speedway. For that, Brad was named the Hard Luck Award winner. That carried with it a RaceQuip helmet. His point check was for $530. He also was a Contingency Connection Wild Card winner.

Next was Eric Gabany, the fourth and final recipient of a Bilstein Shocking Performance Award. His came for two outstanding runs with his 358 Modified at Mercer Raceway park. His point check was $520. He was the final Contingency Connection Wild Card winner.

Nineteenth was Steve Feder. He earned $510 and a set of seat belts from RaceQuip in addition to a R2C gift certificate.

Placing twentieth was Mark Flick. He received $500 in the final year driving for car owners Lon and Pam Baker.

Long reviewed the tentative 2012 race schedule and announced several new sponsors for the 2012 season. Watch for future announcements for further details.

Finally, Long announced two rules changes designed to make the race programs a bit more exciting. The Modified Tour will now utilize point average handicapping for the top twelve starting positions in the A Main. “We think that this will give more racers a shot at the win,” he said. “It will also produce more passing for the fans, as the top runners will have to claw their way to the front each night.” And, to spice things up in the pits, drivers will be able to play Mulligans if they do not like their pill draw, which is used for heat race line-ups. For $5, the driver can buy a second chance in the pill draw.

The roster of 2011 sponsors for The Modified Tour, Inc. included: Bicknell Racing Products; Hoosier Racing Tire Corp.; World Racing Group – DIRTcar; Sunoco Race Fuels – Bazell Oil Co.; Approved Toilet Rentals, Inc.; Bert Transmission; Big Daddy’s Speed Center Inc.; Bulldog Rear Ends – Diversified Machine, Inc.; Engles Trucking Services, Inc.; Bilstein Shocks – Fastline Performance; ISC Racers Tape; Hall’s Safety Equipment Corp.; King Brothers; Kirkey Racing Fabrication Inc.; Landrum Spring; McCool’s Signs and Graphics; Motorsports World; Oyler Photos & More; Pietragallo Gordon Alfano Bosick & Raspanti, LLP; Preist Enterprises, Inc.; Pro Shocks; R2C Performance Products; RaceQuip; Ray’s Racing Collectibles; Rock Concrete; Rod End Supply; Slippery Rock Sportswear; T & D Machine; Ultra-Shield Race Products; Valken Wheels; Winters Performance Products Inc.; and Wrisco Industries Inc. Watch for further additions to the list of 2011 sponsors.

Completing its fourteenth year of success, The Modified Tour, Inc. racing series is a non-profit organization established to give the V-8 Modifieds in the Western Pennsylvania area the opportunity to compete for higher purses and for a seasonal point fund. It expands the profile for this exciting brand of motorsports throughout the the tri-state area.

Grant Assistance from Darke County Emergency Management Agency Makes Project Possible ROSSBURG, OH (Feb. 3) – Fan and participant safety continues to be a high priority at Eldora Speedway for owner Tony Stewart, as reinforced by this week’s announcement that an outdoor weather alert system will be placed on the grounds of the famed speedway. The unit, which will be unique to the area, will be erected within a month and will be fully functional prior to the 59th season opener on Saturday, April 14. The placement of the multiple purpose alert system was made possible through ongoing efforts of Larry Kemp, Eldora Speedway senior adviser and Rick Lee, Darke County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) director, after Lee made the popular destination aware of an available Special Project Grant through the Ohio EMA. Kemp approached Stewart with the concept, who gave immediate approval to proceed. “Eldora Speedway wants to continue its position as role model when it comes to safety for fans and participants,” stated Kemp. “The completion of this exciting project emphasizes the concern that we have for not only our race fans, but for our neighbors.” Purchased through Whelen Engineering of Chester, CT, the alert system has an audible circumference range of one mile, and is equipped with a public address system to aid in special instructions to the patrons following the activation of the alert siren. The audio capability is unique to the area and is considered a plus by Lee. “We are excited about the capabilities this Whelen unit has to offer. Our primary focus with this system is to offer advance alert to the many campers that populate Eldora during its major race weekends. Not only will the system warn the campers and fans of impending severe weather conditions, but collaborative efforts between our offices, the Darke County Sheriff’s Office and the Eldora Speedway officials to offer evacuation and sheltering instructions can be delivered.” In addition to the race fans, neighbors of Eldora Speedway will be afforded an extra level of protection from severe weather, as the alert system will complement existing units in Rossburg and Burkettsville and will be fully functional 365 days a year, not just on race populated weekends. Lee credited Stewart for his concerns, “Eldora Speedway is a key player in putting Darke County on the map, and annually brings thousands of people into our community. Our office is here to assure that in the event of an emergency, we can offer assistance. Tony Stewart exemplifies true allegiance to safety for his patrons through this project, one which offers us another level of preparedness.” Erection of the system is expected to be completed in mid-March with the unit to be fully operational within a few days of the completion of that construction. Activation of the unit will be primarily through the Darke County Sheriff’s Office based upon weather alerts issued by the National Weather Service; however, the Eldora Speedway officials will have the ability to issue alerts and public address instructions...

And while Lee expressed his excitement of Eldora Speedway’s cooperation, he was quick to offer that “the alert system is in place to offer another level of caution. The race fans need to be continually aware of impending weather situations, and monitor NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) and National Weather Service issued alerts and warnings.”

Eldora Speedway’s season swings open Saturday, April 14, with tripleheader program featuring the Sunoco sponsored American Late Model Series, UMP DIRTcar Modifieds and Stock Cars.
Dan Brown of Sutton, QC, plans a full Airborne Speedway 358 DIRTcar Modified schedule in 2012. He ran a part-time Airborne schedule in 2010, nearly a full schedule in 2011 despite some motor issues He’s purchased a Bicknell chassis, added a new sponsor and is working out an engine deal with (Yves) Lafrance Performance. The competition is intense in Airborne’s DIRTcar 358 Modified division. The average starting field for a Ernie’s Discount Tools Modified feature in 2011 was 29 cars – most of which were separated by four-tenths of a second or less. Top-10 finishes were worthy of respect each and every week. Any race program not working hard to move forward can end up in the other direction. “I got more seat time last year and it made a difference, but we still struggled to finish races,” Brown said. “We could have had five top-5 finishes, but things broke. We were making our own parts trying to get by.” Brown drove the No. 327 Modified to two top-10 finishes in 2011, including a 5th-place run on Casella Night. His son Matt and Lawrence Gaylor serve as his race night crew and help him out during the week. This year, Brown has signed a new sponsor, HYVA Corp., a hydraulics and telescoping cylinder manufacturer. They will join Les Carrieres de St. Dominique Quarry, CSTP Inc of Foster, QC and Gaylor’s Garage of Fulford, QC. Dan, Matt and Lawrence attended the recent Modified setup seminar conducted by Airborne promoter Mike Perrotte. “We learned a lot and are very appreciative of Mike’s making the effort to do that,” Brown said. The No. 327 team intends to donate a percentage of its purse money to a local organization working with kids with learning disabilities. “We haven’t set a exact number yet, but we’ll be meeting again with them and displaying the car on their behalf the day before the Airborne opener,’ Brown said. “We’ll definitely be racing for a cause this season.” Contact: Tom Herzig 802-882-8131

Just 3 times in 50 laps did yellow wave in this battle between 3 generations and 3 of the toughest multi-car teams in Florida. Lap 1 saw Chad Olsen spin in turn 4 while part of the lead-pack wad cars up in turn 2. Kenny Wallace and Wayne Hammond were big losers in the accident which ultimately ended Fast Qualifier Hammond’s night. The next 25 laps were green and Kyle Bronson pulled out a gap in the first 2 laps and kept David Reutimann and Ivedent Lloyd, Jr. at bay through the competition caution on lap 26. Bronson, David Reutimann, Lloyd, Kyle Strickler, and “4-time” Jeff Mathews were the top 5. On lap 32 Curt Myers hit the back stretch wall and brought the yellow out. As Myers made his way to the apron he about took Buzzie Reutimann out with him but all was okay between the 2 drivers. Reutimann kept Bronson honest but the driver of the 40B never let him have a shot and took victory with ease leading all 50. Reutimann finished 2nd with Lloyd, Strickler, and Mathews in pursuit. Buzzie Reutimann was 6th, Kenny Wallace an impressive 7th off the comeback trail, 8th was Bart Hartman’s, Nick Hoffman 9th, and Buzzy Adams completed the top 10.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Midwest City, Oklahoma – February 4, 2012 – Drivers and fans alike have been calling for a more diverse schedule of tracks. Well this year’s schedule for the Park City, Kansas based National Championship Racing Association modified division will not disappoint as eight venues make up the eleven race schedule with two tracks hosting the tour for the first time ever and one return visit after a three year hiatus. The fifteenth year for the NCRA modified division kicks off on Saturday night, April 7th at 81 Speedway in Park City, Kansas in the first of only three stops scheduled at the home base for the series. Then a big double-header Memorial Day weekend awaits the tour which kicks off on Saturday night, May 26th at “The Hummer,” Humboldt Speedway in Humboldt, Kansas. From there the tour makes their first stop in several years at Mid-America Speedway in South Coffeyville, Oklahoma on Sunday night, May 27th. Both events allow either the current NCRA modified rules or USRA modified sanction rules, no mixing and matching of both. The second annual “Hoosier Daddy” Father’s Day Speedway takes place on Sunday night, June 17th at 81 Speedway where the modified division will be joined by the series sprint car winged warriors. In their first appearance since 2008 the tour will make a stop atop the Garfield County Fairgrounds and Enid Speedway in Enid, Oklahoma on Saturday night, June 24th. Then the late July classic takes place on Friday and Saturday night, July 13-14th during the 56th running of the annual Hutchinson Grand Nationals at the Kansas State Fairgrounds in Hutchinson, Kansas where Saturday night’s championship feature winner will earn $2000. It will be a weekend of first for the tour on Friday and Saturday night, August 17-18. It all begins on Friday night with Elk City Speedway in Elk City, Oklahoma hosting the Kansas based modifieds for the first time ever. Then one night later it will be the tours first ever appearance in the big state of Texas as they take on the regulars at Route 66 Motor Speedway in Amarillo, Texas. Both events will use either NCRA modified rules or USRA modified rules, no mixing and matching of both. Sunday night, September 2nd will be the annual Labor Day weekend appearance at the Belleville High Banks in Belleville, Kansas before the season ending event at 81 Speedway. The upcoming 2012 race season will be the 42nd consecutive for the Park City based National Championship Racing Association, which sanctions five different racing divisions in a four state area. Other divisions the series sanction include sprint cars, late models, southern sport modifieds and the new 305 sprint car division.
BAY CITY, Mich. – Brady Coen won the 2011 post-season drawing for a new Brinn transmission. The veteran IMCA Modified driver from Wiley, Colo., made himself eligible for that award by finishing fifth on night two of the Flatlander special at Sherman County Speedway. Brinn gave $50 product certificates, applicable toward the purchase of a new transmission from the Bay City, Mich., manufacturer, to top 10 finishers at 30 designated specials and special series events last season. Those drivers were then entered in the drawing. Brinn has already renewed the same awards package for 2012, its 10th season as an IMCA sponsor. Certificates will be mailed from the IMCA home office after official results are received for designated events. “The transmission giveaway was a great way to cap off the season for the Brinn program and Brady Coen is a very deserving winner,” IMCA Marketing Director Kevin Yoder said. “It’s great that Brinn has been a supporter for a decade now and we look forward to awarding another transmission at the end of the 2012 racing season.” In addition to transmissions, the product line at Brinn also includes bell housings, flywheels and drive flanges, steering quickeners, starters, shock dynamometers and yokes and U-joints Information about those products is available by calling 989 686-8920 and at the www.brinninc.com website.

HOLYOKE, Colo. – Major changes for the 2012 season at Phillips County Raceway start at the top and go all the way to the surface of the 3/8-mile dirt oval at Holyoke. BST Promotions has been contracted to operate the track, where regular race nights move to every other Friday starting May 4 and feature the IMCA Modified, IMCA Sunoco Stock Car, IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock and Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods. “We’re confident drivers and fans will come out and see all of the great changes and additions and help us make the 2012 race season one for the history books,” the BST’s Joe Bellm said. “We’ve made a lot of improvements for this season, everything from a new logo to most importantly the brand new racing surface.” More than 80 truckloads of dirt were laid down and county crews transformed the track into a wide, smooth sand- and rock-free oval. “The county has done 110 percent of everything we asked them to. That’s bound to make this track one of the finest and fastest in the region and help us increase car counts as well,” Bellm said. “It also allows us to work in conjunction with I-76 Speedway, Lamar Speedway, Sherman County Speedway, Lincoln County Speedway, allowing drivers in the four sanctioned divisions to race at Holyoke on Friday nights and then again on Saturday at another IMCA track.” Fans will appreciate some of the other race night improvements. “Phillips County Raceway has partnered with Budweiser and Monster Energy Drinks and we will have a beer garden available for the spectators in the grandstands,” Bellm noted. “We believe this will help attract more fans to the stands for our TGIF racing events.” More information on the upcoming season at Holyoke is available at the new phillipscountyraceway.com website and on Facebook. Test and tune for all divisions is Saturday, April 21. The Blood Sweat and Tears Series for Modifieds and Stock Cars headlines the Wednesday, July 4 show, along with Hobby Stocks, SportMods, midgets and dwarfs. Late models and lightning sprints also take turns on weekly cards. Season championship night is Aug. 24, with a rain date of Sept. 16. Phillips County is in IMCA’s Central Region for Modifieds and Probe Industries Northern Regions for Stock Cars and for Hobby Stocks.
Super DIRTcar star eager for UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit at Volusia BARBERVILLE, Fla. – Jan. 31, 2012 – There’s no place Brett Hearn would rather be during the month of February than the Sunshine State. “Oh, yeah, I always look forward to Florida in February,” said Sussex, N.J.’s Hearn, who will migrate south for the 15th consecutive year to compete in the Super DIRTcar Series Big-Block Modified portion of the 41st UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit Racing Equipment on Feb. 22-25 at Volusia Speedway Park. “I don’t know what I would do if we didn’t make the trip. I enjoy it and everybody on my team enjoys it.” Much of Hearn’s affinity for his annual working vacation, of course, derives from the sparkling performance record he’s put together in Florida Big-Block Modified action over his legendary career. He’s the Northeast open-wheel division’s resident Mr. Florida, a winner of a record seven Super DIRTcar Series Florida Tour points championships and 20 features. No other driver has won more than three titles since Big-Block Modifieds began contesting a mid-winter Florida series in 1978, and Hearn’s career victory total nearly doubles that of Danny Johnson’s second-best figure of 11. Hearn, 53, celebrating triumphs in Florida has become a constant, especially at Volusia, where the vast majority of his checkered flags have come. Since 1998, he has won more races during Volusia’s UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit than any other driver – Sprint Car, DIRTcar Late Model and DIRTcar UMP Modified racers included. Is there a secret to Hearn’s amazing success at the sprawling half-mile oval located less than a half-hour outside Daytona Beach? He said there’s nothing in particular, but he does note that escaping the winter freeze at home for the sunny and warm Southeast serves as a great “motivational tool” for him and his team. “We all like going down there,” said Hearn, a seven-time winner of the overall Super DIRTcar Series Big-Block Modified championship. “Not only do we get away from the cold, but we’re all Late Model and Sprint Car fans so we get to see those divisions racing when we’re not running. That helps motivate my guys to work harder in the winter time to go down and strut our stuff.” This year Hearn will once again battle a star-studded roster of DIRTcar Big-Block Modified standouts in four programs during the UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit. The division’s schedule boasts 30-lap features paying $2,000 to win on Wed., Feb. 22, Thurs., Feb. 23, and Fri., Feb. 24, and a 50-lap grand finale offering a $5,000 top prize on Sat., Feb. 25. Hearn will be one of at least a half-dozen former Florida Tour winners in the Big-Block field, joining defending UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit champion Stewart Friesen of Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont.; three-time titlist Danny Johnson of Rochester, N.Y.; two-time champion Alan Johnson of Phelps, N.Y.; 2010 DCN champ and defending overall DIRTcar Big-Block Modified titleholder Matt Sheppard of Waterloo, N.Y.; and 2003...

BARBERVILLE, Fla.

I enjoy it and everybody on my team enjoys it.”

Much of Hearn’s affinity for his annual working vacation, of course, derives from the sparkling performance record he’s put together in Florida Big-Block Modified action over his legendary career.

That helps motivate my guys to work harder in the winter time to go down and strut our stuff.”

This year Hearn will once again battle a star-studded roster of DIRTcar Big-Block Modified standouts in four programs during the UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit. The division’s schedule boasts 30-lap features paying $2,000 to win on Wed., Feb. 22, Thurs., Feb. 23, and Fri., Feb. 24, and a 50-lap grand finale offering a $5,000 top prize on Sat., Feb. 25.

Hearn will be one of at least a half-dozen former Florida Tour winners in the Big-Block field, joining defending UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit champion Stewart Friesen of Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont.; three-time titlist Danny Johnson of Rochester, N.Y.; two-time champion Alan Johnson of Phelps, N.Y.; 2010 DCN champ and defending overall DIRTcar Big-Block Modified titleholder Matt Sheppard of Waterloo, N.Y.; and 2003 titlist Tim Fuller of Watertown, N.Y., a World of Outlaws Late Model Series regular who will pull double-duty during the week.

Last year Hearn fell short of the UNOH DIRTcar Nationals points crown, finishing second to Friesen by 10 points. But he won once – putting him back in Volusia’s Victory Lane after an uncharacteristic winless visit in 2010 – and finished second (a rare last-lap loss in the series opener at the hands of Friesen), third and fifth in the other headliners.

It was a typically solid week for Hearn, who ranks the Volusia speedplant as one of his favorites.

“I really like it,” said Hearn, who won the 800th feature of his distinguished three-decade-long career in 2011. “It’s always been a really fun, racy, kind of cool place to race. It’s wide, it’s pretty fast, and it has a little bit of an unusual shape, which really mixes things up.

“It’s also deceiving how much engine you can use there. You’re on the gas at that place.”

Hearn will wheel around Volusia in his familiar Madsen Motorsports Teo-Pro No. 20 machine, albeit this year without the Wentworth Construction logo gracing its bodywork for the first time in five years. (“We’re sponsor hunting right now,” said Hearn.) New to his operation will be car chief Matt Hearn, the 23-year-old son of Brett’s younger brother and chassis builder Bobby.

Hearn’s hauler will arrive in the Daytona area several days before the scheduled start of DIRTcar Big-Block Modified action at Volusia, giving him and his crew some “fun time” – probably a stop at Daytona International Speedway, a night spent watching World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series competition at Volusia, a little nightlife in Daytona. Then they’ll unload their car and get down to business running nightly doubleheaders with the dirt Late Model class and soaking up the week’s unique atmosphere.

“There’s two things I really like about (the UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit),” said Hearn, who is eyeing a 2012 schedule focused on the Super DIRTcar Series and weekly DIRTcar-sanctioned racing at Albany-Saratoga Speedway in Malta, N.Y., and Lebanon Valley Speedway in West Lebanon, N.Y. “First, we always have fun when we get to race with the Late Models. As much as anything, we all just enjoy watching those guys race when we’re not, but I think that when we run a combo race with the Late Models it’s a big event. They draw a lot of fans and we draw a lot of fans as well, and when you put all that in one place it becomes pretty electric.

“And second, the fact that people who buy a ticket for the stands can come through the pits (the ‘Free Fan Pit Pass With Every Ticket’ offer) makes the week a lot more interesting. We get to see a lot of more people that might not otherwise come in the pits. Every year I see people I haven’t seen in years who are down in Florida either for the 500 or live down there now.”

The UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit is a 12-night short-track blockbuster that features nightly doubleheaders. In addition to four evenings of competition for the Super DIRTcar Series (Feb. 22-25) there will be six nights of Late Model action (DIRTcar UMP-sanctioned on Feb. 20, 21, 22 and 24 and WoO Late Model Series 50-lap A-Mains on Feb. 23 and 25); the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series on Feb. 17-19; the UNOH All-Star Sprint Car Series on Feb. 15-16; and the DIRTcar UMP Modifieds on Feb. 14-21.

For more information on the UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit – including special pricing on advance-sale tickets and details of the ‘Free Fan Pit Pass With Every Ticket’ offer that allows fans to get up-close-and-personal with the race teams every night – visit www.DIRTcarNationals.com or call 877-395-8606.

(Green Bay, WI) Jan. 30 – Three northeast Wisconsin-based businesses, all with ties to dirt track racing, have signed on to back the Badger Mod Tour during its inaugural season in 2012. The tour will be referred to as“The Custom Windows Plus Badger Mod Tour presented by Floors By Design & Directional Drilling Services.” The series will host modified races at clay ovals in the eastern half of Wisconsin this year. “With the support of these three businesses, we can secure the guaranteed point fund for the drivers and that’s a big step for our first year,” said series director Joe Verdegan. “Our point fund will pay 20 spots deep to tour members and guarantees the winner a minimum of $1500 cash, along with other contingencies we’re currently working on. We’re new and we’re taking “baby steps” so to speak in our first year. We want to be around for the long haul.” Custom Windows Plus owner Jon Courchaine owns an IMCA stock car and also sponsors several other teams in many divisions in the area. “I love the concept of a touring modified series in Wisconsin and it’s long overdue,” said Courchaine. “We’re glad to support it.” With locations in Green Bay, Madison and Wausau, Custom Windows Plus specializes in window sales and replacement. Please check out their website at customwindowsplus.com, or call (920) 855 6555. Floors By Design is co-owned by Ashwaubenon native Ricky Lemmen. Floors By Design has sponsored many NASCAR drivers over the years, among them Johnny Sauter, Kyle Busch and Kenny Wallace. They specialize in residential homes and commercial interiors with functional designs that reflect their clients’ personality and lifestyle. They handle carpet, ceramic tile, hardwood, vinyl, laminate, commercial, residential and everything else in between. You can learn more about Floors By Design by checking out their website at floorsbydesignllc.com or calling (920) 434 9904. The store hours are Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturdays they are open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Staff can be reached on evenings and weekends by appointment. Floors By Design is located at 2780 Deerfield Avenue in Suamico. Directional Drilling Services of Wisconsin is owned by modified driver Eric Van Iten. Van Iten cut his teeth in the IMCA stock car ranks in the late 1990’s and moved up into the modifieds in the mid 2000’s. When not racing Van Iten has built up a successful business in specialized drilling and boring. His work often takes him all over the Midwest. Van Iten’s also a pretty tough customer.

We want to be around for the long haul.”

Custom Windows Plus owner Jon Courchaine owns an IMCA stock car and also sponsors several other teams in many divisions in the area.

In July 2010 he shrugged off a broken cheekbone and won a modified feature at 141 Speedway in Francis Creek. Van Iten can be reached at evaniten@centurytel.net.

The series is set to open in 2012 Saturday, May 26 at Beaver Dam Raceway. For more information check the website badgermodtour.com. Downloadable application forms are available on the website.
Buckeye State School Will Field Nine-Car UMP Modified Team At Volusia Speedway Park Featuring Nationally-Known Stars & Student Drivers BARBERVILLE, FL – Feb. 2, 2012 – If anyone attends a racing program at Volusia Speedway Park from Feb. 14-25 and leaves without remembering the words University of Northwestern Ohio, then they just weren’t paying attention. The Lima, Ohio-based institution is, after all, the title sponsor of the 41st UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit Racing Equipment, assuring itself plenty of spoken, visual and written exposure throughout the half-mile oval’s mid-winter motorsports spectacular. What’s more, the school that boasts the world’s first High Performance/Motorsports degree program will also be an active participant in the racing meet’s DIRTcar UMP Modified action, which runs nightly from Feb. 14-21. The UNOH logo will adorn the bodywork of nine UMP Modifieds, including four driven by nationally-known pavement stars and four prepared and steered by UNOH students. UNOH’s UMP Modified assault on Volusia will feature NASCAR veterans Kenny Wallace and Ken Schrader as well as the fast-rising Dillon brothers, Austin (2011 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series champion) and Ty (2011 ARCA Racing Series titlist). Each driver will compete in the UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit in UMP Modifieds sponsored by UNOH. “This is going to be the busiest Speedweeks we’ve ever had,” said UNOH Vice President of Development Steve Farmer. “It’s always a lot of work to get ready for Volusia, and this year our hands are full even more. We’re the title sponsor of the DIRTcar Nationals for the first time, plus we’re sponsoring the All-Star Circuit of Champions Sprint Car series (which runs at Volusia on Feb. 15-16), we’re having our first UNOH Career in Motorsports Expo (on Feb. 18 at Daytona International Speedway) and we’re sponsoring Ty Dillon in the NASCAR Truck Series at Daytona.” The year marks UNOH’s fifth consecutive year as a backer of Volusia’s annual dirt-track racing extravaganza. Previously a presenting sponsor, the school has increased its participation in 2012 – a clear signal of the significance the event holds for the Buckeye State university. “Our involvement with the World Racing Group, the DIRTcar Nationals and the World of Outlaws has been very, very successful,” said Farmer. “It’s really enhanced the presence UNOH has in the industry as well as in motorsports and it provides us a great grassroots platform to recruit students and show them what the University of Northwestern Ohio has to offer.” A private, not-for-profit school that launched its High Performance/Motorsports degree program in 1991, UNOH uses the DIRTcar Nationals to cap a unique extra-curricular activity that provides its budding mechanical minds true real-world training. Five years ago the university enhanced the motorsports program’s curriculum by launching a fully-sponsored, in-house UMP Modified team – a unique after-school pursuit in which a select group of students builds and maintains UMP Modifieds and races them in the weekly events at nearby Limaland Motorsports Park, which is owned and operated by UNOH.
A private, not-for-profit school that launched its High Performance/Motorsports degree program in 1991, UNOH uses the DIRTcar Nationals to cap a unique extra-curricular activity that provides its budding mechanical minds true real-world training. The trip to Florida for the DIRTcar Nationals serves as the culmination of the 2011-2012 racing season for the UNOH motorsports team, which is housed in a shop on the university’s 189-acre campus.

The UNOH UMP Modified team will invade Volusia with 32 students, all of whom receive scholarships in the same manner as student-athletes at other schools. More than 180 High Performance/Motorsports program students participated in try-outs for the select number of positions on the team; all the team members are transported to Florida each February to end their year-long stints with a busy week of activity servicing the UMP Modifieds.

UNOH’s army of student mechanics at Volusia will include Kody Weisner of Muskegon, Mich., Chris Puskas of Somerset, N.J., Travis Fleshman of West Union, Ohio, and Josh Ulrich of Gettysburg, Pa. – a quartet that will not only work on the University-built UMP Modifieds, but drive them as well. The balance of the team members will crew the UNOH-prepared cars, but Wallace, Schrader, the Dillon brothers (the grandsons of famed NASCAR team owner Richard Childress) and reigning Limaland Speedway UMP Modified champion Todd Sherman of Churubusco, Ind., who will enter the ninth UNOH-affiliated car, will also have students assigned to assist their efforts.

The four highest-profile UNOH drivers are not only well known on the national scene, but also accomplished in UMP Modified action at Volusia. Schrader is a former UMP Modified points champion of the UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit (he won it in 2008), while Wallace and the Dillon brothers have each reached Victory Lane in UMP Modified competition over the past five years. Last year the Dillon boys and Schrader swept the Triple 25s program that closed out the UMP Modified portion of the DIRTcar Nationals, and last year’s marquee UMP Modified event, the ‘Gator Championship,’ was captured by Ty Dillon.

The UMP Modified schedule during the UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit features $1,000-to-win A-Mains on Feb. Feb. 14, 15, 16 and 17; a pair of $700-to-win preliminary events on Feb. 18 and 19 leading into the headline ‘Gator’ championship race paying $5,000 to win on Feb. 20; and a multiple-features-only finale ($700 to win each) on Feb. 21.

Accenting UNOH’s activity at Volusia, the school will have a healthy presence at Daytona International Speedway, which sits less than a half-hour drive from Volusia. The school is sponsoring Ty Dillon’s NASCAR Camping World Truck Series machine, and 34 UNOH High Performance Motorsports student “interns” will be in the Daytona pit area assisting ARCA teams as part of a work arrangement with the series. In addition, the inaugural UNOH Career in Motorsports Expo on Feb. 18 at Daytona will give area students who have expressed interest in UNOH an opportunity to hear several guest speakers from the motorsports industry, including Childress.

Throughout the UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit, UNOH representatives will be available in Volusia’s midway area to promote the school’s Motorsports programs.

“The University draws students from all 50 states and 16 foreign countries, and in the last few years we have had an influx of students interested in our High Performance/Motorsports Programs from the state of Florida,” said UNOH President Dr. Jeffrey A. Jarvis. “By building and racing vehicles in Florida that will be driven and crewed by UNOH High Performance Motorsports students, the University hopes to continue to encourage both interested prospective students and local Florida high school instructors to check out everything that UNOH has to offer them.”

Founded in 1920, the University of Northwestern Ohio is comprised of the College of Business, College of Technologies and College of Distance Learning. UNOH offers over 60 programs in High Performance, Alternate Fuels, Diesel, Automotive, HVAC, Agricultural, Business, Marketing, Medical, Legal, Travel, IT Computer and Sport Marketing and Management with Associate degrees, Baccalaureate degrees and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration.

For more detailed information about the University of Northwestern Ohio, visit www.unoh.edu.

The UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit is a 12-night short-track blockbuster that features nightly doubleheaders. Joining the DIRTcar UMP Modifieds on the busy schedule will be the UMP Late Models (30-lap A-Mains paying $7,000 to win on Feb. 20, 21 and 22 and a 40-lap, $10,000-to-win finale on Feb. 24); the World of Outlaws Late Model Series (50-lap A-Mains for $10,000 to win on Feb. 23 and 25); the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series (Feb. 17-19); the UNOH All-Star Sprint Car Series (Feb. 15-16); and the Super DIRTcar Series for Big-Block Modifieds (Feb. 22-25).
