(by J.D. Green) KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Mother Nature finally played nice with Lakeside Speedway this past week allowing for a dynamite super fast track. The track led to side-by-side high and low lines all evening long. The second feature of the evening involved the top 24 cars of the USRA B-Mod class. Thirty seven cars began the night in competition. The guess was who would lead lap 1: Hall of Fame legend Gene Claxton or Aaron Marrant. To everyone’s surprise, young Rodney Schweizer powered to the front and stayed in that position until lap 8. Claxton produced an old-fashioned slide job on the leader entering turn 3 to take the lead. Last week’s winner, Chad Clancy, made a late-race rush to power close to Claxton but to no avail as Claxton brought home the win. Nic Bidinger loves the front row and loves a dry smooth track as he led all 25 laps of the USRA Modified main event. However, he had to survive challenges from Darron Fuqua on several occasions as Fuqua used the low line to pull even. Aaron Marrant and Tim Karrick were also putting on a race as they were side by side with Karrick claiming this battle for third. Bidinger held off Fuqua to claim his second victory at Lakeside Speedway in as many weeks. “Racing on the River’s Edge” continues every Friday night through October with the USRA Modifieds and USRA B-Mods, plus Grand Nationals and Factory Stocks. Gates open at 5 p.m., hot laps are at 6:45 and the first race gets underway at 7:30. Adult ticket prices are $12, kids ages 7-12 are $6 and children 6 and younger are admitted free of charge. Seniors and military personnel with ID are admitted for $10. For more information on special events or ticket information call the Lakeside Speedway office at 913-299-9206 or visit www.lakesidespeedway.net.
( By Scott Lee Stewart) — He “retired” last year. Sold off all his stuff, left the game. Then, his uncle calls: “Come drive for me!” So, he does. Has some early success in 2013, then slumps a bit. Loads up Friday night, heads to the Hummer. Car falls off the trailer going down the road. Now what? Like all good athletes, Whitey Folk knows adversity, and laughs in its face. Thus, when the green flag dropped in this week’s McCarthy Auto Group/USRA Modified feature, all the other stuff no longer mattered. What did matter was tracking down a wicked fast Ryan McAnnich and wrestling away the lead away. Then, it was pure speed, driving to victory. On a track where three wide racing was the norn, and four wide was almost possible, Josh Everhart secured the second spot, with McAnnich an oh so close third. Coming from a tenth starting spot, Jess Folk, Jr. blasted his way into fourth, while Luke Driskell claimed fifth. If rubbin’ is racin’, there was a whole lotta racin’ going on in Factory Stocks. Jeremy Wilson, 2011 points champ, returned to his old form, driving away with a wire to wire win while those behind him traded paint. Tyler James finished second. Jay Lamons, Jr. had a flat, changed it, and roared back for third. David Matlock took fourth, Clint Drake was fifth, and also the last car to finish the race! Things were somewhat less rough and tumble in the Ray’s Metal Depot B-Mod feature, however winner Jeremy Chambers and runner up Jimmie Davis did stage a classic duel that brought fans to their feet. Riley Whitworth mixed it up with the leaders as well, but ended third. Tyler Kidwell claimed the fourth spot, with Matthew Lang finishing fifth.
Greenwood, NE — The Fifth Annual Charlie Clark Memorial race at I-80 Speedway is fast approaching. The annual event honoring the late chassis builder Charlie Clark, who passed away in 2009, will move to Sunday, May 26 and it’s going up a notch. The traditional Charlie Clark Memorial feature for A Mods has been 44 laps. 22 laps then a red flag to let drivers work on their cars on the front stretch, then another 22 laps with the feature paying $2,022 to win. Not in 2013. The same 44 lap format has been retained, but with a big twist. There will be two A features. The first will start 28 cars and go for 22 laps and then the red flag will wave, giving drivers and crews a short time to work on their cars. That 22 lap feature will pay out a purse featuring $2,022 to win. Then, after the short red flag stop, up to the top 22 finishers from the first feature will inverted (a maximum of 24 cars will start feature two) and that 22 lap feature will be ran with another purse featuring $2,022 to the winner being paid. Past winners of the race include; Jay Noteboom in 2009, David Murray in 2010, Kyle Berck in 2011 and Luke Wanninger in 2012. In addition, the SLMR Dirt Series will be part of the Charlie Clark Memorial and they have upped the ante as well with their feature paying $2,022 to win, with second place receiving $2,222 to win. Kyle Berck won the SLMR season opening event at Butler County Speedway on April 28. The B Mod Feature of the Charlie Clark will pay $1,022 to win and the Hobby Stock Feature paying $722 to win. Pit Gates openat 3 pm., Grandstands at 4:30 with Racing at 5:55 pm. Grandstand Admission is $15 for Adults, $5 for Juniors (6-12) With 5 and Under Free. Pit Passes will be $30.
GRAIN VALLEY, Mo. — The third time was, in fact, not the charm for an Iron Man Challenge show at the Valley Speedway in Grain Valley, Mo., and the event slated for Thursday, May 16, has been canceled. Originally scheduled for March 8, the 3rd Annual “Thunder in the Valley” event was postponed due to a severe winter storm. The second attempt on April 18 was rained out, but this time it was politics that prevented the show from going on. “Apparently the meeting at city hall last night didn’t go very well,” said USRA president Todd Staley. “I talked to Dennis (Shrout, Valley Speedway promoter) this morning and he felt that in light of the outcome of last night’s board meeting that it would not be in the best interest of the future survival of Valley Speedway to have a race on Thursday night.” On Friday, May 17, the Iron Man Challenge for USRA B-Mods return to the LA Raceway in La Monte, Mo. Gates open at 4:00, hot laps begin at 6:45 and racing starts at 7:15 for the Schwab’s Tinker Shop Show-Me Shootout. Also on the card will be the USMTS Modifieds. On race day, fans can pick up a coupon good for $2 off adult grandstand admission at Casey’s General Stores locations in Knob Noster, La Monte and Sedalia while supplies last. The LA Raceway is a located 3.5 miles west of SR 127 on Hwy Y. For more information, check out www.laraceway.com online.

GRAIN VALLEY, Mo. — It would appear that the new City Administrator is targeting Valley Speedway. Here is a communication that was sent out from the home owners association that has been trying to shut down the race track: Also, the new City Hall Manager would like to invite GV residence to attend the Monthly City Hall meeting May 13th to voice their dislike and concern with the speed race track noise. Our new City Manager is surprised that this has gone on so long and there appears to be some city ordinance regarding noise levels, that should never have allowed this to go on. Call City Hall for a meeting time. The race track has not been notified of this meeting by the city. I’m not sure where this is going to go but if you can attend this meeting and show your support. This effects the car track, sand drag, and the MX track. The city manager said that she gets complaints every time the track races, and she is tired of the calls. If you don’t have time to come to the meeting, and calls is what they like, then lets start calling them and let them know the benefits of a race track and let them know how much money you spend in Grain Valley while you are at one of these race facilities. If you call, be professional and courteous. We do have friends on the council. A lot of our teams and fans come from out of town and stay in the motels and shop in Grain Valley while they are here, call them and let them know. The meeting is Monday night at Grain Valley City Hall at 6 pm. Make your calls before the meeting if you are unable to attend.
Spring Valley MN – May 11, 2013: Although not a perfect night for racing with cool temps and strong winds, Night number 1 of the 2013 racing season got underway. 121 cars showed up to do battle with the high car count of 40 USRA B-Modifieds on hand to do battle. The WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds pulled onto the track for the first feature of the night. Veteran racer Bryan Hernandez brought the field to the green flag. Greg Pfeifer Jr. quickly moved past Hernandez on lap one to take over the lead. With two completed jarred Boumeester moved past Hernandez for the second spot. Pfeifer Jr. slowly pulled away from the pack until a caution flew on lap five. On the restart Pfeifer Jr. continued to lead with Boumeester, Cory Crapser and Hernandez running three wide for the second spot. Dustin Scott worked into the fifth spot. Scott moved past Hernandez on lap nine for the fourth spot. Jason Born worked into the top five on the next lap and on lap eleven raced side by side with Scott for the fourth spot. Born took over fourth as Scott dropped back to fifth. Crapser caught Pfeifer Jr. up front but was unable to put enough pressure or find a faster line to get around him. Pfeifer Jr. came home with the win followed by Crapser, Boumeester, Born and Scott. Crapser and Boumeester took home the heat wins on the night. What a field of USRA B-Modifieds on hand with 40 cars in the pit area. Brandon Hare jumped into the early lead with Troy Hovey in second after they cleared the four wide battle in one and two. A quick caution on lap three saw Hovey and Hare side by side for the lead. Cory Crapser and Erik Kanz raced for third. With four down Hare retook control of the race with Crapser solidly in third. John VanMinsel worked into the fourth position. Hovey continued to work on Hare up front and on lap seven pulled alongside for the lead with Crapser now joining in on the battle. Hare continued to hold a slight advantage as they crossed the line. Shaun Walski moved by VanMinsel for the fourth spot with ten completed. Hovey took the point on lap eleven and on lap twelve Crapser took second away from Hare. VanMinsel, Kanz and Jacob Bleess battled for the fifth spot for the remaining six laps while on lap fourteen Walski worked past Hare for the third spot. Mitch Van Engen was a convincing winner in the USRA B-Mod feature. Van Engen, who has been an occasional visitor to I-90 Speedway, took control of the race after passing Tim Dann on the fourth lap.
