Phelps Ready for Challenge as Super DIRTcar Series Points Battle Begins ELBRIDGE, N. Y. – In less than two weeks, the points chase for the Super DIRTcar Series championship title begins with the DIRTcar Hall of Fame 60 race at Rolling Wheels Raceway Park. Set for Wednesday, June 5, the first points event of the season for the Big-Block Modified tour may serve as a litmus test for the rest of the series. “Rolling Wheels will probably be a good pH to see which cars are going to be fast and which guys are going to be in the championship hunt this year,” said Matt Sheppard, who won the last three annual Hall of Fame events at Rolling Wheels as well as the last three Super DIRTcar Series titles. “As long as we come of there with a good run and start the series off the right way I think we’ll be in good shape.” Rolling Wheels Raceway Park is a clay 5/8-mile clay oval located 20 miles west of Syracuse and 70 miles east of Rochester. Its central location in the heart of DIRTcar racing in the northeast brings the best competitors from all corners of the region. The opening race is expected to bring Bobby Varin, of Johnstown in New York’s Capital Region, Stewart Friesen of western Ontario, Billy Dunn of Northern New York, Brett Hearn of New Jersey, and likely some teams from as far north as Quebec. The variety of competition, coupled with the lack of home-track advantage due to the special-event-only scheduling at the Wheels, means the best teams in the series will be there, and all on even footing. The unique length of the track – slightly longer than the half-mile ovals typically visited by the series – presents a challenge to race teams that will separate the best from the rest. Additionally, the long straightaways and wide turns in the track allow the 800-plus horsepower Big-Block Modifieds to reach speeds unattainable at half-mile tracks, making for an undoubtedly exciting and high-speed feature race. Sheppard, who found victory at Rolling Wheels both times the Super DIRTcar Series traveled there last year, said he cannot pinpoint his secret to success at the track. “I don’t really know, to tell you the truth,” he said. “It just seems to be one of those places that we seem to get along pretty good. My driving style and my car work really well there, and my motor, it’s just a good track for us overall.” Sheppard recently rolled to victory in a the first race of the DIRTcar 358-Modified Series, a series featuring cars similar in most aspects to the Big-Block Modified but with a small block rather than big-block engine. The race, at Merrittville Speedway, drew a star-studded set of drivers, many Super DIRTcar Series regulars. Sheppard recently rolled to victory in a the first race of the DIRTcar 358-Modified Series, a series featuring cars similar in most aspects to the Big-Block Modified but with a small block rather than big-block engine. The race, at Merrittville Speedway, drew a star-studded set of drivers, many Super DIRTcar Series regulars. Brett Hearn, Jimmy Phelps, Pete Britten, Billy Dunn and Danny Johnson all took a shot in the small block, putting in some laps at a highly competitive DIRTcar Northeast series race before starting the Super DIRTcar Series points battle. Sheppard’s win may indicate another year of success for the 9s team, but Danny Johnson, who finished second at Merrittville, and Jimmy Phelps, third, are primed to challenge his supremacy.

“I’m looking forward to getting the series kicked off,” said Phelps, who was vying with Sheppard for the points lead last season, within shooting distance of the top spot through the series finale. “It’s an exciting time of year. Everybody’s pumped up and ready to take a stab at the championship.”

Phelps said he is “cautiously optimistic” about the 60-lap series opener after off-and-on success at Rolling Wheels.

“Over the years, we’ve had a fair amount of success there. We haven’t in the last two or three years,” Phelps said. “We’ve had kind of a love-hate relationship with the place, and we’re hoping that we can go in this year with a different mindset.”

The history of the track, as well as Phelps’ history there as a driver, makes the DIRTcar Hall of Fame 60 something special to the Baldwinsville, N. Y., driver. Knowing that some of the legends of dirt track racing – 2013 inductees to the Dirt Motorsports Hall of Fame & Classic Car Museum as well as past inductees – will be in attendance and watching the race adds to the experience.
“It’s a neat deal when a guy you looked up to when you were young is there, and they’re watching you now,” Phelps said. “There’s so much history there, and it’s neat to have it all under one ‘roof’ so to speak.”
In addition to the Super DIRTcar Series headlining the event, the DIRTcar Sportsman Modified Series will visit Rolling Wheels for its second race of the season after the Sunday, June 2, series opener. The competition in the series is expected to be stout, with last year’s champion Cody McPherson hoping to defend his title against some new and up-and-coming racers in the division – including Pro Stock star Joey Ladouceur. The Midstate Vintage Stock Car Club is also racing at Rolling Wheels for the DIRTcar Hall of Fame 60 race night.

(By Mike Leone) Hartford, OH May 22, 2013 Sharon Speedway will celebrate the Memorial Day Weekend by hosting two events with complete shows both Saturday and Sunday nights (May 25-26)! The Bill Emig Memorial “Wild Card Weekend” will feature the Sweeney Chevrolet Buick GMC RUSH Dirt Late Model Touring Series both nights! Saturday night will also include the Summit Racing Equipment Modifieds, HTMA/Precise Racing Products Econo Mods and Deforest Used Parts Mini Stocks, while Sunday night’s program will also have the Governor Insurance Agency DIRTcar Big-Block Modifieds, Open Stock Cars, and the Mini Stocks. All divisions will be racing for increased payouts. Race time is 7 p.m. both nights. “We are really looking forward to the weekend,” stated General Manager Dave Willoughby. “We tried this two-day Memorial Day Weekend format last year, but the weather ruined Sunday’s event. It’s looking like a beautiful weekend so we invite everyone out to enjoy two big days of racing.” After a wildly successful debut on April 20 at Hagerstown Speedway, the Sweeney Chevrolet Buick GMC RUSH Dirt Late Model Series comes to Sharon Speedway to continue a busy holiday weekend after a scheduled event Thursday at McKean County Raceway. The weekend is expected to draw competitors from Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, New York, Maryland, Delaware, and Ontario, Canada. RUSH will compete in complete events each night paying $1,500 to-win as part of the “Bill Emig Memorial” and will also be eligible for the “Wild Card Weekend” point fund. An extra $1,500 will be posted with $500 going to the champion using overall points for the weekend plus a nightly card draw to add to those scores. Former Bill Emig driver, John Buzzard, will be remembered with a dash held each night that will pay $100 to-win. Also, TurboStart Batteries will award one lucky RUSH racer a 16-volt racing battery by luck of the draw! Drivers will get one chance each night. Former Seattle Seahawk, Rick Singleton leads the Sweeney RUSH Tour to Sharon following his Hagerstown win and has a two-point lead on Maryland driver Glenn Elliott. All of the top Touring racers will be on hand in addition to Sharon’s regulars that have the advantage of competing in five weekly Sharon events to date. Dennis Lunger, Jr. is the current Sharon point leader with two victories, while 2011 and 2012 champions Josh Double and Will Thomas III have also been victorious this season in addition to Touring regular Mike Pegher, Jr. The Governor Insurance DIRTcar Big-Block Modifieds have gotten off to a strong start with solid car counts and five different winners! The ground-pounding big blocks will share the top billing with RUSH on Sunday paying $1,500 to-win as well. The Kings started off the year victorious with Rex, Jr. winning opening night followed by Rex, Sr. The veterans continued to shine the last three weeks with Jim Weller, Brian Swartzlander, and Dave Murdick all picking up victories. King, Sr. currently has just a two-point advantage on Weller. It could easily be...

It could easily be argued that the Summit Racing Equipment Modifieds have been putting on the best racing week in and week out. Strong car counts and quality racing have been the norm. The ante will be upped on Saturday as the Mods battle for $750 to-win, $100 to-start in their 20-lap feature.

Defending co-champion Joel Watson has been the only racer to repeat this season, while Alan Dellinger, Jeff Johnson, Randy Hall, and most recently Bob Diver have won events. Dellinger has an 18-point lead over Mike Kinney with Shawn Shingledecker, Clayton Kennedy, and Joe Gabrielson rounding out the top five. Ironically drivers in second through fifth in points are searching for their first wins of the season.

Things will change up a little bit for the Gibson Insurance Agency Stock Cars as they’ll have the night off Saturday, but will be in action on Sunday in an “open rules” event. While the Stocks normally race for $350 to-win, Sunday’s event will pay $750 to-win and is expected to attract some outside talent. In regular Stock Car competition, Mike Clark, Tim Burns, Bryan Wagner, Paul Davis, and Bob Sloss all have a victory.

The upstart Econo Mod division continues to attract approximately 20 cars per week. The HTMA/Precise Racing Products division will be on the card Saturday night racing in a 15-lap feature paying $350 to-win. The youngsters have had their way to date with Ryan Fraley winning the first two races of his career to lead the points by nine over two-time winner Jeremy Double. Others winners have included Steve Burns, Jr. and last Saturday night Jacob Eucker became the youngest winner in the track’s 84-year history taking the win at age 12!

Rounding out the weekend card will be the Mini Stocks. And like the Barris Supply RUSH Late Models, they’ll be in action both days as well. The Mini Stocks will battle for $200 to-win each night. The track’s only three-time 2013 winner, Scott Gilliland, also has the biggest point lead of any division at 39, but with two nights of points on the line, things could really change this weekend. Bill Fuchs, Ray Gregory, last year’s champ Jim Haefke, Jr., and last Saturday’s first ever winner Travis Creech complete the top five in points.

Once again for both nights, one lucky boy and girl under the age of 14 will win a bicycle or scooter thanks to King Bros and Sharon Speedway. This promotion will continue throughout the 2013 season. The home-cooked kitchen special is fish dinner with macaroni and cheese and mixed veggies.

No annual registration fees for new cars will be charged this weekend. Pits open at 4 p.m. Saturday with grandstands at 5 and heat races slated for 7. Sunday’s gate times will be one hour earlier, but racing will still begin at 7. Grandstand admission for those 14 and over is $13 on Saturday and $15 on Sunday, while children under 14 are always free. Pit passes are $30 on Saturday and $35 on Sunday. Parking and camping is always free.

Sharon Speedway is owned by the Blaney, Weller, and Kirila Families and is a 3/8-mile dirt track located on Custer-Orangeville Road in Hartford, Ohio near the intersection of Routes 7 & 305.
(Craig Revelle – Finish Line Web Design) May 21, 2013 — Billy Dunn and his team already have several weeks of racing in to start the 2013 season, some tracks had yet to open up. The season was about to swing into high gear this past weekend though, as Mohawk Raceway opened up on Friday night, and Dunn was returning to defend his championship that he earned in 2012. As the busy weekend continued, Dunn was back at Canandaigua Motorsports Park on Saturday night, and had back to back Mr. DIRTcar 358 Modified Series races at Cornwall Speedway and Merrittville Speedway on Sunday and Monday. The weekend started at Mohawk International Raceway on Friday night. Dunn was back behind the wheel of the Laurent Ladouceur owned car. He started second in the qualifying heat race, and maintained that position throughout the 10 lap race. In the 25 lap main event, Billy started from the outside of the second row in the fourth position, and by lap five he was up to third. Just a couple laps later he was up to second and set his sites on the leader. Over the duration of the race, Dunn maintained that second, but heavy lapped traffic made for an exciting finish, as Dunn caught the leader and nearly took the lead. On Saturday night, Dunn was back to Canandaigua Motorsports Park. He struggled in his qualifying heat race, and was forced to the last chance consolation race. A fourth place finish locked him into the 35 lap main event, but he would be marred deep in the field to start the race. He patiently worked his way forward, and by lap 26 he had made steady progress, sitting in the 10th position. Just five laps later he was inside the top five, and gained one more position over the final couple circuits to finish in fourth. Sunday was the start of a two day trip north of the border with Mr. DIRTcar 358 Modified series races. The first stop was Cornwall Motor Speedway. Not long after arriving at the track, the skies opened up, and the series race was postponed until Sunday, August 4th. From Cornwall, Dunn traveled to Merrittville Speedway, and started the night with a fourth place finish in his qualifying heat race, locking into the 100 lap main event. He would start from the 15th starting position. By the end of the night, Dunn had moved forward, posting a solid ninth place finish. This coming weekend, Dunn will return to Mohawk International Raceway driving the Laurent Ladouceur owned car, and will be back in his Big Block Modified on Saturday night at Canandaigua Motorsports Park. Billy Dunn would like to thank Number One Speed, FastLube of Watertown, Finger Lakes Auto Machine, Glen A. Gould Estate Construction, Frosty’s Ice Cream, and Bicknell Racing Products for their continued support for the 2013 racing season.
(Craig Revelle – May 19, 2013) — The long holiday weekend in May a very exciting time of the year, as it gets the racing season into overdrive with every local track now open. Mohawk International Raceway in Hogansburg, New York was my destination of choice on Friday night, with Brockville Speedway and Cornwall Speedway filling out the rest of my weekend plans on Saturday and Sunday respectively. The first stop on by busy Victoria Day weekend was Mohawk International Raceway, located just across the border at Cornwall. It was their first race of the 2013 season and they had a full show lined up with Modifieds, Sportsman, Pro Stocks, Mod Lites and the Bandit division. In the Modifieds, it was Chris Raabe taking home the win, holding off a late race challenge from Billy Dunn as they worked through lapped traffic. Dunn crossed the line second, with Joel Doiron, Luke Whitteker and Brian McDonald rounding out the top five. Over the past couple season’s Dylan Evoy had dominated the Sportsman division at Mohawk Raceway, and that continued on Friday night as he took the opening night win, holding off a hard charging Daryl Nutting on the final corner of the final lap to take the win. Nutting was second with Corey Wheeler, Brent Kelsey and Mike Arquiette completing the first five. Other winners on the night were Rock Aubin in the Pro Stocks, Scott Walldorf in the Mod Lites and Jean Marc Larose in the Bandits. Saturday was a great day for racing at Brockville Ontario Speedway. While I do get to go to several other tracks over the course of the season, BOS is my home track, and I always look forward to Saturday nights. Brockville had a full program in store with a 40 lap Sportsman Seaway Series event highlighting the night, along with Modifieds, Street Stocks, Rookies and the new Rookie Sportsman class. 37 Sportsman cars were on hand, and when the dust settled at the end of the night it was last week’s winner Shane Pecore standing in victory lane once again. Dylan Evoy finished second, Quebec invaders Steve Bernier and Mathieu Desjardins finished just ahead of BOS regular Jonathon Ferguson to complete the top five. There was plenty of damage done in the Modified feature as a multi-car wreck on lap four eliminated many cars from competition. At the end of the 30 laps though, it was 10 time BOS champion Danny O’Brien in victory lane for the first time in 2013. Stephane Lafrance finished second ahead of Lee Gill Kyle Dingwall and Jason Riddell. Other winners on the night were Aaron Pugh in the Rookie Sportsman, Steve Kearney in the Street Stocks and Bob Ray in the Rookie division. Cornwall Speedway was next up on my weekend schedule. They were hosing their season opener that featured a 100 lap Mr. DIRTcar Series race/Canadian Nationals Series event for the 358 Modifieds. AJ Kingsley was the Late Model winner, Ken Hartshorn was the Pro Street winner, Ray Bechler was the Thunder Car winner and Jordan Miller was the Novice Sportsman winner.

Matt Sheppard continued his strong season at Canandaigua Motorsports Park, already picking up his third win of the season. Rob Bellinger was the winner at Brewerton Speedway, and Pat Ward took the popular win at Fulton Speedway. Jordan McCreadie won at Evans Mills Speedway.

For those of you attending Brockville Speedway on Saturday night, be sure to stop by the Finish Line Web Design merchandise trailer. We have new stock coming in regularly. You can purchase Finish Line Web Design t-shirts and hats, Steve Barber “Saturday Night Sheriff” t-shirts, Kitley Motorsports t-shirts, Jessica Power t-shirts, as well as t-shirts for Luke Stewart, and 2012 Modified champion Kyle Dingwall.
FULTON, NY – MAY 21,2013 (By Dave Medler) – SUNY Canton one of the long time supporters of the Fulton Speedway and title sponsor of the Sportsman division is proud to present a night of high speed, side by side racing this Saturday, May 25th on the “High Banks” of the Fulton Speedway. SUNY Canton has been long known as one of the top schools in the State Universities of New York system of schools, but in all of the Northeast. What SUNY Canton has to offer is a family atmosphere and class sizes that allows all professors and instructors to know their students on a one to one basis. What they have to offer is too numerous to mention here so please visit http://www.canton.edu/ to see all the opportunities they have. As they say at SUNY Canton, “Great Majors, Great Careers.” As always please support those who support racing. On the race card this Saturday will be the Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modifieds, SUNY Canton Sportsman, NAPA Late Models, E&V Energy Novice Sportsman and Four Cylinder Stocks. Have you always wanted to challenge the “High Banks” of the Fulton Speedway? This Saturday will be your chance as the One-On-One Spectator Races are part of the nights action. All you need to hit the track is your registered & insured street vehicle, a valid driver’s license and a D.O.T approved helmet. When you get to the track head to the track office behind the main grandstands to signup. Last Saturday night was both joy and relief for Pat Ward as he won the Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modified feature. Friday night at the Brewerton Speedway Ward saw one slip away on the last lap when the second place runner who lost his brakes got into Ward taking both out of contention for the win. Ward stated after his Fulton win that 2013 hasn’t been up to his or his teams standards and it felt like a huge weight was lifted off their shoulders. Is there anything better than a first time winner and the excitement they show in victory lane? Jason Occhino after a longtime of disappointment put it all together picking up his first ever SUNY Canton Sportsman feature win in front of a cheering grandstand. Once again the NAPA Late Models put on a great feature that saw Alan Fink win his second in a row. In victory lane, an emotional Fink dedicated his win to one of the legends in racing, his grandfather “Irish” Jack Murphy who recently passed away. If you haven’t seen the NAPA Late Models, you owe it to yourself to check them out. As the weeks click off and the driving skills in the E&V Energy Novice Sportsman improve by leaps and bounds, it was Jeremy Dygert who parked his sharpNo.22 in victory lane. Can anyone beat Skip DeGroff in the Four Cylinder Stocks? As of last Saturday nights racing DeGroff is undefeated in 2013. Adult grandstand admission will be $12...

What better way to kick it off than an evening of racing excitement at the Brewerton Speedway presented by Tracey Road Equipment, a marketing partner and sponsor of the Big Block Modified division. On the race card this Friday, May 24th will be the ground pounding Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modifieds, Nationwide Insurance IMCA Modifieds, Anchor Bar & Grill Mod Lites and the Four Cylinder Super Stocks. You never know what’s going to happen at the “D-Shaped Dirt Demon.” What a wild night it was last Friday in the Modifieds. A first lap crash took out some of the heavy hitters that included, Billy Decker, Chuck Bower, Ryan Phelps, Matt Hulsizer and Dale Planck. Not only did they take big hits on the speedway, but also in the point standings. This week look for them to be hammer down trying to make up for what was lost in the season long battle for the points championship. Once the feature got back underway, it looked like Pat Ward was heading for victory lane. On the last lap going into the first turn, second place running Ryan Bartlett who lost his brakes got into Ward carrying both cars up the track allowing Matt Sheppard and Robbie Bellinger to shoot by. Most in attendance figured with former track champion and current point leader Sheppard in the lead the win was his. Bellinger had other plans and he was able to blast by Sheppard for the popular win. Kevan Cook and Chris Fleming had another shootout in the Nationwide Insurance IMCA Modifieds. Fleming took advantage of a late yellow to get by Cook for the victory. Once again knocking on the door was Jason Amidon. It’s just a matter of time before Amidon knocks that door down and gets to victory lane. It finally happened in the Anchor Bar & Grill Mod Lites, Tim Devendorf was beaten. Joe Isabell took a brand new chassis with only one race on it and parked it in victory lane. Devendorf may have had his win streak stopped, but he is still a force as he came from deep in the pack to grab a second place finish. Chuck Powelczyk racked up career win # 59 in the Four Cylinder Super Stocks. Looking at the all-time wins at the speedway, Chuck is three wins away from tying the all-time Nationwide Insurance IMCA Modified feature winner Sean Lias at 62. Can Powelczyk ever catch Brewerton legend “Bare Foot” Bob McCreadie who has 82 Modified victories. The Brewerton and Fulton Speedways is proud to welcome back Tracey Road Equipment who has a long history in dirt racing.
Canandaigua, NY – May 18, 2013 – Dave Roberts, Canandaigua Motorsports Park PR Correspondent For the second week in a row, Matt Sheppard came from the 18th starting spot to win his third of the 2013 season at the Canandaigua Motorsports Park on Saturday night in the Team Tire Masters Big Block Modified 35-lap feature on Empire/Beck’s Recycling and Corby‘s Collision Night. Other repeat winners were Mike Welch (Parts Plus Street Stock), Derek Excell (Pure Stock) and Jordan Siri (Community Car Care of Waterloo Legends Sportsman) while Greg Cool (Safety Awareness Solutions Sportsman) and Darryl Ruggles (Castner Performance 305 Sprints) reached victory lane for the first time in 2013. Sheppard, 30 of Waterloo, NY, took the lead from pole-sitter Dave Rauscher on lap 25, making a move to the inside of Rauscher as the pair entered turn three and was never headed for the remainder of the race. “This car has been awesome all year long,” said Sheppard, as he explained his night to the large CMP crowd that had filtered to the Ontario County Fairgrounds. “It might’ve been even better tonight.” “We went from an 18th starting position to the lead without a caution period against the type of competition they have here every week,” Sheppard added. “It’s a lot of fun racing against these guys.” Rauscher took the lead from his pole-position start and had quite the battle with Mike O’Brien in the early stages of the event. At the lap 10 mark, it was Rauscher, O’Brien, Eldon Payne Jr., Steve Payne and Tim Currier. While Rauscher had control of the race, O’Brien never lost sight of him. At the halfway point, Sheppard moved into sixth and on lap 21 he got himself into third and pressed Payne for the runner-up position. He got by Payne one lap later and started creeping up on Rauscher. Three laps later, Sheppard was off to his second consecutive win in as many weeks. “I have to give a lot of credit to my guys. I wasn’t even working on this car today. They set it up well.” Jimmy Phelps moved into second on lap 32 but didn’t have enough to catch the high-flying Sheppard as the two crossed the finish line. Third was Rauscher in an impressive run. Fourth and fifth were early season winners Billy Dunn and Alan Johnson. Heat winners were Justin Wright, Tim Currier and Dave Allen. The consolation event was won by Danny Johnson, who was up as high as fourth in the main event before having to exit the track late in the race to change a flat. In the 25-lap Safety Awareness Solutions Sportsman feature, Greg Cool won his first-ever feature event at Canandaigua, taking the lead on lap 11 and holding off Tyler Meeks at the end as the two had a battle for the lead with just a handful of laps remaining. Cool was able to win by a 1.442-second margin at the finish. “I didn’t know where victory lane was,” kidded Cool...

(By: Rodney Rescott) West Lebanon, NY: Brett Hearn has been the dominate driver in the Big Block Modifieds at the Valley of Speed since the beginning of the season, but his quest for 5 in a row came to an end, thanks to the Wild Child. For the fans in the stands, that wasn’t the only excitement that the night of racing at the legendary high banks had to offer. Albany Times Union and Wohrle presented the night’s racing action, along with a special $2,000 to Win Budget Sportsman Shootout, plus a Pro Stock extra distance Power Play Series event. It comes as no shock that Brett Hearn has been dominating as of late. And this year at the Valley of Speed, he has clearly put himself in the position of the man to beat when it comes to the Big Block Modifieds. So as the 30 lap feature event took to the speedway, everyone was gunnin’ for the #20H. Kim Lavoy and Wayne Jelley brought the field to the green, but the caution came out quickly as a couple of cars got into a jingle in turn 2. The field regrouped, and started again with the #34L of Lavoy still out front. Eddie Marshall powered his way into the lead by lap 4, and held strong till the caution flew again on lap 12. That put the #34B of Andy Bachetti right on the heels of Marshall on the restart. And by lap 16, Bachetti took over, and powered away from the field. Hearn battled his way through the field, getting to the runner up spot by lap 22, but could not run down Bachetti’s #34B. At the checkers, Andy Bachetti captures his first for 2013, followed by Hearn, Marshall, Keith Flach and J.R. Heffner. In the Small Block Modified feature, Steve Hough drove his #34 to the lead by lap 3, but handed it over to the #34B of Bachetti on lap 20, giving Andy Bachetti 2 Modified wins in one night. Hough had to settle for 2nd, followed by Jason Herrington, Chad Pierce, and Wayne Jelley. The Budget Sportsman Feature was action packed from start to finish with a special 2nd Annual $2,000 Andrew Sherman Cup. Robbie Knipe powered his #18 out front early of the stacked 39 car field. But the biggest player in the event was the caution flag, as it flew early and often. The first was on lap 2 with multiple cars tangling in turns 3 and 4. That brought out a brief red flag. Once the green silk flew again, Knipe and Robbie Speed’s #4NY battled it out up front while the field behind them was like an angry beehive of action. A scaring wreck on lap 15 brought the field to another red flag as the #25 of Colin Clow and #74 of Chris Lynch came together causing Lynch to spin wildly down the front stretch making heavy contact with the outside wall and several other cars. All drivers were checkout and ok, but Lynch’s night was over, and Clow was DQ’d for rough driving.

When racing resumed, Dipple was out front, with Tommy Johnson’s #45 hot on his heels. But Johnson could not muster enough to get to Dipple, as the #1 checked out on the field. At the checkers, Tyler Dipple crossed the line first, followed by Johnson, Knipe, Jake Jelley, and Josh Gaylord.

At the conclusion of the race, and official mechanical protest was placed on the #1 of Dipple, therefore the finish is considered ‘Unofficial’. The outcome of that protest will be posted on our website by mid-week.

Earlier in the night, the racing got started off with some great racing action in our Purestock class as Shawn Perez captured PS#1, Jay Casey scored the win in PS#2, while Ray Hall Sr held on to win in PS#3.

On top of that, on Friday night at the Brewerton Speedway, Ward had the fastest car and in the lead on the final lap when second place Ryan Bartlett who lost his brakes, got into Ward taking both out of contention for the win. On Saturday night at the Fulton Speedway, Ward put it altogether and got the monkey off his back, as he outran teammates Billy Decker and Larry Wight for hugely popular win in the Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modifieds. Other winners on Syracuse haulers night were, Jason Occhino, SUNY Canton Sportsman (First Career Win) Alan Fink, NAPA Late Models, Jeremy Dygert, E&V Energy Novice Sportsman and Skip DeGroff, Four Cylinder Stocks. At the start of the 35 lap Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modified feature, Dale Planck got the jump on Tim Schneider and the rest of the field to lead the opening lap. Planck’s lead was short lived as one lap later Adam Roberts was able to shoot by Planck on lap 2. On lap 4 disaster was avoided when Robbie Bellinger and another car made contact on the front straight, sending Bellinger into the wall. After the contact, Bellinger shot across the track and into the infield, and somehow was missed by the cars behind him, namely Dan Vauter at speed missed Bellinger by inches. When the green came back out, Planck went back into the lead while behind him the field scrambled for position. With 10 laps complete, Planck was still running the top and held a narrow lead over Jim Witko and Larry Wight. Behind the top-two, Roberts and Pat Ward ran in the top-five. On lap 13, the battle was tight up front with Planck, Witko and Wight, as they used every inch of the speedway looking for an advantage. Just one lap later, Witko was able to get by Planck to be scored the new leader. Even Witko’s lead was short lived as Wight dug on the extreme bottom to shoot into the lead on lap 15. At the halfway point, Wight was still locked on the bottom as he led by about five-car lengths over Witko with Ward closing quick as the laps clicked off. On lap 20, Ward grabbed second using the top of the speedway as he now took off after teammate Wight. Just two laps later Wight and Ward exited turn four as they closed quickly on Katelyn Kane. Ward was able to trap Wight behind the Kane car to get by Wight and be scored the new leader just before a caution. With 10 laps to go it looked like Ward was shot out of a cannon as he bolted out to a half a straightaway lead, leaving Billy Decker, Wight, Chad Phelps and Ryan Phelps to fight it out for top-five finishing spots.
Over the remaining laps and no yellows to tighten the field up, Ward ran away and hid to be the first under the checkers. Decker, Wight, Ryan Phelps and Chad Phelps finished second through fifth.

After getting out of his Gypsum Express/Gypsum Wholesalers/ Stadium International Trucks /L J L Kevlar Racing Engines/ No.42p/Bicknell a relieved and excited Pat Ward talked about his win.

“We’ve been getting closer and closer, working our tails off,It’s obvious how bad we’ve been running, fifteenth, sixteenth, seventeenth. We’re up against a real tough field of cars everywhere we go. There is no excuse to run like that with the equipment John, Laura and Larry (Wight) give me. There has been a lot on my mind and I want to dedicate this win to my dad and mom that are not here tonight. I miss them a lot at the track, this is a good way to get going.”

Ward looked back on the heartbreak the night before at Brewerton. “Ryan (Bartlett) had the car to beat till he lost his brakes. Unfortunately he used my car as his brakes going into one on the last lap, we had that race won. Stuff like that happens unfortunately. Some days your the bug, some days you’re the windshield. We’ve been the bug a lot lately”

Ward finished up what a fun race it was to run and win. “It’s a lot of fun when your racing your teammates, Larry (Wight) and Billy (Decker) you know they are going to give you their best shot. Larry gave me the top one time. We were good in three and four, he was probably better up at this end. We kept our momentum up and it’s just good fun racing. The competition here is second to none. When you win here you know you’ve done something.”

In the 20 lap SUNY Canton Sportsman, another driver got a huge weight lifted off his back. Jason Occhino took the lead on lap 5 and never looked back. Even with a late yellow, Occhino didn’t flinch out distancing the tough field for his first ever win. Chris Hulsizer, Beth Schneider who came from deep in the field, early leader Greg Mrzywka and Joe Kline rounded out the top-five.

Occhino related that he wanted to give up so many times with the bad luck he has had the last couple years fixing the car. He said he has great help but came in every week with their heads hung low and figured he wasn’t getting done as a driver. This year he and his team decided even if they had to bring it back on wrecker they were going to be more aggressive and it paid off.

In the 15 lap E&V Energy Novice Sportsman feature, Jeremy Dygert took the lead on lap 2 and never looked back. Shannon Pitcher in his first competitive race was impressive finishing second. Gary Hoppins, Jacob Davis and Nick Rupert finished third through fifth.

This coming Saturday, May 25th,SUNY Canton presents another exciting night of racing on the “High Banks”. On the race card will be the Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modifieds, SUNY Canton Sportsman, NAPA Late Models, E&V Energy Novice Sportsman, Four Cylinder Stocks and the always unpredictable One-On-One Spectator Races.

BREWERTON, NY – MAY 17,2013 (By Dave Medler) – What a night at the Brewerton Speedway in the Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modifieds. There was a first-lap crash that took out some top competitors and late in the race the top-two runners, Ryan Bartlett and Pat Ward made contact on the final lap. It ended with Robbie Bellinger passing Matt Sheppard on that final lap for his second career Brewerton win. Other winners on Eagle Beverage/Bud Light Night were, Kevan Cook, Nationwide Insurance IMCA Modifieds, Joe Isabell, Anchor Bar & Grill Mod Lites and Chuck Powelczyk, Four Cylinder Stocks. Ryan Bartlett outgunned Jim Witko and the rest of the field to lead the opening lap of the 35 lap Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modified feature just before a wild melee broke out. It appeared something happened to the Chuck Bower car as slowed dramatically just crossing the start/finish line stacking up the field collecting Bower, Dale Planck, Ryan Phelps, Billy Decker and Matt Hulsizer who went over. All drivers were okay, but the same couldn’t be said for their equipment that suffered extensive damage and couldn’t continue. With 10 laps complete, Bartlett still set the pace out front. Witko ran second but had Pat Ward all over him looking for a way by with Rob Bellinger and Dan Vauter showing in the top-five. At the halfway mark, Bartlett was having his best run of the season as he was still setting a quick pace at the front of the field. Witko, Ward and Bellinger were still in a tight battle for second, third and fourth with Vauter still showing in the top-five. With 20 laps showing on the scoring tower, Bartlett was on rails as he opened a full straightaway lead, as he looked to runaway and hide. Pat Ward now ran second with Witko, Bellinger and Vauter still in the hunt. With 10 to go Bartlett still led, but now timing and scoring showed Ward slowly reeling in Bartlett, cutting into his big lead. Bellinger, Witko and now Matt Sheppard who started deep in the pack worked his way into the top-five. When starter Dave Farney gave the five to go sign, Ward drew within one car length of Bartlett setting up a shootout to the finish with Bellinger, Sheppard and Witko still in contention. After working on Bartlett trying to find a way by, Ward was able to inch ahead exiting turn four coming down for the white flag. Going into turn one side by side Bartlett’s car slid into Ward taking both up the track and out of the groove. This allowed Sheppard and Bellinger to shoot by. Just when it looked like Sheppard was going to pick up the win, Bellinger had other ideas as he drove it in hard in three and four and was able to outrun Sheppard to be the first under the checkers in the exciting finish. After doing the victory lane roof dance and celebrating with his crew, Bellinger...

After doing the victory lane roof dance and celebrating with his crew, Bellinger talked about how he put his Thompson Road Tavern/Black River Vending Services/JR U-Store/ Westward Painting/ No.8R in victory lane.

“We were pretty good all race, and for that to happen,” Bellinger talking about the contact between leaders Pat Ward and Ryan Bartlett, “They just opened the door and we were there to capitalize.”

“I saw them touch in turn one and both slid right to the top. I knew Matt (Sheppard) had been underneath me in three and four a couple times. We came down the backstretch coming down for the win. I had to pinch him a little and then we were alright.” finished up Bellinger about the pass to get by Sheppard for his second career Brewerton win.

Bellinger also celebrated in victory lane with Fulton Speedway SUNY Canton Sportsman driver Beth Schneider who said yes to his marriage proposal just days earlier.

It looked like Kevan Cook was going to romp to an easy win in the Nationwide Insurance IMCA Modifieds after taking the lead on lap 4. Late cautions put Chris Fleming on Cook’s back bumper. Over the final laps Fleming could get door to door with Cook, Cook was to strong as he picked up the win. Jason Amidon, Jim Walsh and Dane Keller Jr. finished third through fifth.

Just over a week ago Joe Isabell took delivery of a new chassis and had one run on the car last Saturday at the Fulton Speedway. It didn’t take long to work the kinks out as he dominated the 20 lap Anchor Bar & Grill Mod Lite feature. Tim Devendorf came from deep in the field to finish second followed by Justin Williams, Doug Williams and Nick Graziano.

This coming Friday, May 24th, Tracey Road Equipment, the title sponsor of the Big Block Modifieds presents a night of fast, affordable, family, fun entertainment.
Rolling Wheels concessions are again ready to step up to the task of providing quality, affordable items at Central New York’s premier motorsports venue. Vendors such as Buck & Ruthie’s Famous Ice Cream Treats, the Candyman, and Barney’s Barbecue add to the culinary variety.

“We may have the best deal in town on hot dogs and hamburgers. Wash it all down with your favorite Pepsi or Budweiser product, and you can’t find a better way to spend the evening with your family or a few friends” said Rolling Wheels Raceway Park General Manager Jeff Hachmann. “It’s just another one of those small things that adds up to big entertainment at Rolling Wheels.
Families will find that there’s no limit to the fun they can have at Rolling Wheels, with bounce houses, driver autograph sessions, merchandise booths, and other midway displays to entertain children of all ages.
An addition to the midway in 2013 is an easily accessible safety and first-aid station to serve fans and staff in the case of accident or emergency.

“My goal is to provide the best in emergency services to drivers and fans alike,” said Rolling Wheels and Super DIRT Week Safety Coordinator Tony McIntyre. “The fan-facing safety and first-aid station will ensure that patrons in the grandstand area will be able to seek prompt medical attention.”

McIntyre, who has 30 years of experience in emergency services and also serves as Baldwinsville Fire Chief, said an expansion to emergency services staff will make it possible to provide the station while still providing top-notch care to competitors in case of an emergency on the track. Every emergency services provider on staff is highly trained in emergency medical services and has ten or more years of experience in the field.

With the Super DIRTcar Series opener, the Sportsman Modified Series, the Midstate Vintage Stock Car Club, and the 2013 Dirt Motorsports Hall of Fame and Classic Car Museum inductees all part of the DIRTcar Hall of Fame 60, spectators will find no shortage of amusement on and off the track. Avid race fans will know that half the fun of race nights is the personalities – listening to the antics of Super DIRTcar Series announcer Shane Andrews, watching the flagging flair of starter Dave Farney, seeing how that one lucky driver reacts when he or she draws the front row in the feature, and occasionally having that rare chance to meet one of the legends of racing. At the Rolling Wheels Raceway’s DIRTcar Hall of Fame, this chance may not be so rare, as members of the 2013 class of inductees to the Dirt Motorsports Hall of Fame & Classic Car Museum will be present at an autograph session at 5:15 p.m.

Additionally, Rolling Wheels is upping the ante for the track and series opener by inviting 95x radio personality Big Smoothie to act as grand marshal and honorary starter. The station will be broadcasting live from the Rolling Wheels midway and will have games and merchandise available at the “If It Rocks, It’s On 95x” booth.

Dedicated race fans will also have the opportunity to receive a FREE Fan Pit Pass with every ticket purchased in advance, allowing them entry to competitor pits after 5 p.m. to meet their favorite drivers. FREE parking and FREE general camping make the DIRTcar Hall of Fame 60 at Rolling Wheels Raceway affordable for fans from near and far.

When the Big-Block Modifieds of the Super DIRTcar Series rev their engines and line up for their signature four-wide salute, all the fans in the grandstand will realize why the racing action at Rolling Wheels Raceway Park is second to none. The long straight-aways of the 5/8-mile track and the wide turns allow drivers to reach speeds unattainable at most dirt short tracks.
(Craig Revelle – Finish Line Web Design) May 15, 2013 — After a strong start to the 2013 season during the opening month, Gary Tomkins was looking to continue that success this past weekend at Canandaigua Motorsports Park. The team has worked hard in the shop, knowing that is what it will take to get Gary back to victory lane at the famed track. Gary finished his qualifying heat race from the fourth starting spot, moving up from his fifth place starting position in the rather uneventful race. He started 11th in the feature and cautiously worked his way forward. He was soon up to the third position, and battling for second when the handling started to go away. Tomkins fell back to fifth, but switched lanes to the outside in the closing laps and began to close in on the cars in front of him before lapped traffic hindered his progress. Tomkins crossed the finish line in fifth place, for his second consecutive top five finish. “It was a good run for us, but the car just got tighter as the race went on”, says Tomkins after the race. “We changed lanes, and that helped us, but the lapped traffic really hurt our progress late in the race”. Gary will return to Canandaigua Motorsports Park again this Saturday night looking to extend his top five streak, and maybe even grab that elusive victory that he has been seeking since returning to full time competition at Canandaigua last season. Tomkins has won at all levels of the sport, including the 2004 Mr. DIRTcar Modified Champion. He has 17 Super DIRTcar Series victories, and has won 45 Big Block Modified feature events at Canandaigua Speedway, 12 wins at Cayuga County Speedway, 7 wins at Rolling Wheels Raceway, plus multiple wins in the Sportsman division at each track. Gary Tomkins Racing would like to thank all of their sponsors for their support going into the 2013 season. Ken Brewer Construction, Beyea Performance, Pole Position Raceway, and D C Rauscher, along with Bicknell Racing Products, Bilstein Shock, Valken Wheels, Ray and Debbie Tuit, Advance Auto Parts and Finish Line Web Design are all an integral part of the success of our racing team.
(By Mike Leone) Hartford, OH May 15, 2013 Sharon Speedway continues to battle Mother Nature seemingly every week this year, but is hoping for brighter, warmer weather this Saturday night (May 18) as it looks to complete its fifth straight week of racing action on Trumbull County Business College Night. It’ll be another installment of “Steel Valley Thunder” featuring the Governor Insurance Agency DIRTcar Big-Block Modifieds, Barris Supply RUSH Late Models, Summit Racing Equipment Modifieds, Gibson Insurance Agency Stock Cars, HTMA/Precise Racing Products Econo Mods, and the Deforest Used Parts Mini Stocks. The other three winners this season currently command the top three spots in points with April 27 winner Rex King leading the way by three over May 4 winner Jim Weller, Jr. and opening night winner Rex King, Jr. by eight. New Yorker Ricky Richner continues to make the tow south every week from Niagara Falls and rides fourth just 14 points back. Richner will look for his fifth straight top six finish Saturday! Defending co-champion Joel Watson became the first repeat winner in the Modifieds last Saturday in the Summit Racing Equipment division’s fifth event. Watson has quickly moved up the charts in the division’s all-time win list in recent seasons and continues to be the guy everyone is shooting for. After not competing in the season’s first two shows, Watson has won two of the three he has raced in! The division’s all-time winner and one-time winner this season, Alan Dellinger, saw his point lead shrink to just seven over Mike Kinney after his first DNF of the year. Neither Kinney nor Shawn Shingledecker, who sits third in points just eight behind Dellinger, have yet to win in 2013. A total of 44 different races have already competed this season! The youngsters have certainly had the upper hand in the Econo Mods this season. Ryan Fraley is coming off of his second win of the season and his career, while two-time victor Jeremy Double and Steve Burns, Jr. have also added wins. Burns has a two-point lead on Fraley, while Double is 18 back. The car count also continues to rise as new cars make their way out; in fact, 28 different drivers have competed to date this season. Scott Gilliland feels he’s been lucky in two of his three wins this season, but the nonetheless the Warren, Ohio driver leads all racers at the speedway in wins this season and commands the biggest point lead at 36 over Ray Gregory, who has been oh so close to victory on several occasions this year. Gregory ironically is ahead of 2011 and 2012 champions Bill Fuchs and Jim Haefke, Jr. by only one point! Once again Saturday...

In the Four Cylinder Stocks Eric Zirbel looked to be heading to a win, but a front flat with just two-laps to gave the lead and the win to track Champion Skip DeGroff.

(Craig Revelle – Finish Line Web Design) May 13, 2013 — Fresh of his feature win at Canandaigua Motorsports Park last weekend, Billy Dunn and his team were looking forward to returning to the track and going for back to back wins. Their second place position in the track point standings after the first month of the season has them feeling confident about their season so far, and hoped to back that up with another solid run. Due to the handicapping system that most tracks use, Dunn would have to start from near the rear of the field in his qualifying heat race. He was able to battle his way to a fifth place finish in the preliminary qualifying heat race. In the 35 lap main event, Dunn would fire from the 18th starting spot and by lap eight he had worked his way into the top 15 and was inside the top ten just five laps later. Over the final 20 laps, Dunn Moved up two more positions, and ended the night with a solid eighth place result and is now third in track points, just four points back of second place. “The car was ok, just a little bit off from where we need to be though”, says Dunn. “We will keep working at it, and hopefully we can be a little better next week”. This coming weekend, Billy will return to the Laurent Ladouceur owned 358 Modified on Friday night set to defend his track championship at Mohawk International Raceway. On Saturday night, he will be back at Canandaigua Motorsports Park looking to return to victory lane. The first Big Block Modified Super DIRTcar Series event is Wednesday, June 5th at Rolling Wheels Raceway Park. Billy Dunn would like to thank Number One Speed, FastLube of Watertown, Finger Lakes Auto Machine, Glen A. Gould Estate Construction, Frosty’s Ice Cream, and Bicknell Racing Products for their continued support for the 2013 racing season.
(Craig Revelle – May 13, 2013) — The weather this past weekend was unusually cold, damp, and some areas even had snow. Although Friday night’s racing action was cancelled throughout the area, Saturday turned out to be a great night, despite the cool temperatures. The original plan for the weekend was Can Am on Friday night, and Brockville Speedway season opener on Saturday. The forecast leading up to the weekend was constantly changing, and at times during the week, it appeared there would be no racing at all. However, after a light rain ended on Saturday morning, the weather gradually got better throughout the day, and my mid afternoon the sun was out, and Brockville Speedway opened for the 2013 season. Great car counts were on hand in all classes. Both the Modified feature and the Sportsman feature went down to the final laps, as Brian “Slim” McDonald held off a late charge from Stephane Lafrance to take the win. Tim O’Brien had a strong run in third place while Lee Gill and Luke Whitteker rounded out the top five. The Sportsman feature was won by Shane Pecore, making a last lap, last corner pass on Ryan Poole to take the opening night checkered flag. Dylan Breen, Corey Wheeler and Tabatha Murphy completed the top five. Other winners on the night included Guy Regimbald in the Street Stocks, Corbin Miller in the Rookie division, and Aaron Pugh in the all new Rookie Sportsman class. With Friday getting rained out, and no racing scheduled for Sunday this past week, I enjoyed watching my beloved Toronto Maple Leafs tie up their series against the Boston Bruins. As I write this on Monday morning, the final game of the series is tonight. Go Leafs Go!! Other tracks in the area were also in action on Saturday night, with Chris Raabe taking the win at Evans Mills Speedway for the third week in a row over Brandon Sweet and Jordan McCreadie. Matt Sheppard won at Canandaigua over Danny Johnson, Justin Haers, Peter Britten and Gary Tomkins. Matt Billings had another solid finish running against the best of the best; scoring his second top ten finish of the season. Steve Baldwin took the win at Brighton Speedway in the Late Model division. This coming weekend will be an exciting weekend, as Mohawk International Raceway and Cornwall Motor Speedway open for the season. Mohawk has a full program scheduled with Modifieds, Sportsman, Pro Stocks, Mod Lites and Bandits, while Cornwall opens with a 100 Lap Mr. DIRTcar 358 Modified Series/Canadian Nationals Series race, plus Mohawk Racing Parts Pro Stock Series, Sportsman, Semi Pro and Bandits. Brockville is also back in action this coming Saturday night with a full program on Modifieds, Sportsman, Street Stocks, Rookies and Rookie Sportsman. Many of the Modified teams will pack up from Cornwall and make the long drive to Merrittville Speedway for round two of the Mr. DIRTcar 358 Modified Series.
(By Mike Leone) Hartford, OH May 11, 2013 While just about every race track in the region cancelled due to the inclement weather on Saturday, Sharon forged on with the “Steel Valley Thunder” program on Speed Energy Drink Night. Heavy rains Friday night and overcast, cool conditions led to a fast track and the show was completed just before the rains came again. Celebrating in the Hovis Auto & Truck Supply victory lane were Brian Swartzlander-Governor Insurance DIRTcar Big-Block Modifieds, Josh Double-Barris Supply RUSH Late Models, Joel Watson-Summit Racing Equipment Modifieds, Paul Davis-Gibson Insurance Agency Stock Cars, Ryan Fraley-HTMA/Precise Racing Products Econo Mods, and Scott Gilliland-Deforest Used Parts Mini Stocks. Hunter Zilhauer and Emily Clemens were the two winners of the bike giveaways courtesy of King Bros. and Sharon Speedway. Making just his second appearance of the season, Brian Swartzlander led all 25 laps of the Governor Insurance Agency DIRTcar Big-Block Modified feature to become the fourth different winner in as many events this season! Swartzlander drove a great race through lapped traffic in the closing stages of the event to hold off Rex King, Jr. for the headlining win. “I’m a little tired,” acknowledged the 53-year-old Leechburg, Pa. great. “We were planning on running here tonight. I saw all of the other tracks cancelling this morning and I’m glad we made the trip! He’s (King, Jr.) doing a really good job and getting better and better. We were fortunate to start up front. I don’t know if we could have come from the back. It was sure nice seeing open track, but lapped cars made it a little tough at the end.” King, Jr. and Swartzlander led the field to green with Swartzlander riding the cushion into the lead. Fourth and sixth starting Ricky Richner and Dave Murdick, used the cushion as well to move into third and fourth respectively after one lap. The event’s only caution occurred when Dave Reges did a 360-spin in turn four on the first lap. While Reges kept going, Kevin Green, Erik Martin, and Steve Feder got tangled up and all received heavy damage. Back under green conditions, Swartzlander continued to set the pace over King, Jr. After starting third and falling to fifth on the opening lap, Dave Murdick was able to get around Jimmy Weller III for fourth on lap three. Weller III, who was making his season debut, then had his hands full trying to hold off Rex King in a torrid battle for the fifth spot. Swartzlander caught lapped traffic on lap 13 and his lead began to shrink as both King, Jr. and Richner closed in. Not far behind the lead trio was Murdick, who began to get closer to the leaders on lap 14. It was now a four-car race for third on lap 18 with Murdick trying to catch the lead duo, while having his hands full with Richner, Weller III, and King in hot pursuit.

Back up front, Swartzlander made all of the right moves as King, Jr. shadowed him for the duration, but couldn’t find a way by coming up 0.887 of a second shy. Swartzlander’s 12th career Sharon win came in his McCutcheon Enterprises, Inc.-sponsored #83. Murdick was third. Weller III and point leader King were able to drive around Richner on the final lap in traffic to secure the fourth and fifth spots respectively.

It was a tough break for New Yorker Richner, who ran a close third for 15 laps, only to finish sixth. Richner though has been able to finish in the top six all four starts this season as he sits fourth in points. Seventh through 10th were Skip Moore, Jeremiah Shingledecker, Eric Gabany, and Bob Warren. Heat winners were Murdick, Swartzlander, and King, Jr. over the season-high 21-car field.

After missing the first two nights of competition, last year’s co-champion, Joel Watson, is quickly making up for lost ground. Watson flew from the sixth starting spot to win the Summit Racing Equipment Modifieds for the second consecutive week and has moved into sixth place in the standings.

“This car was tough to hang onto,” said the Conneaut, Ohio standout, who turns 34 on Wednesday. “The track was really patchy with traction. If you slid into the traction, the car would turn anyway it wanted to, and you could just barely hold onto the wheel. I couldn’t drive it hard enough to keep up with the traction in the track.”

Jack Young, who was the co-champion last year with Watson, raced to the early lead in search of his first win with opening night winner, Jeff Johnson, in tow. Watson wasted little time moving forward as passed veteran Larry Kugel for fourth on lap two. Johnson began pressuring Young for the lead before the first caution was displayed with six laps completed for a spin by Gary Sullivan.

When green replaced yellow, Watson’s preferred outside line allowed him to power past Joe Gabrielson for third. It was a three-car race for the lead on lap nine with Young trying to fend off Johnson and Watson. Johnson ducked under Young for the lead in turn four on lap 10 just as Young’s #67 went up in smoke bringing out the second caution.

Watson would make his winning move on the restart as he got great forward bite off the bottom of turn two to drive by Johnson for the lead. Seventh starting newcomer Evan Taylor was quietly moving forward. Taylor passed another newcomer in Greg Johnson for third on lap 11. A pair of cautions slowed action with 13 laps scored setting up a two-lap shootout to the finish.

Taylor was able to pass Jeff Johnson for runner-up on the restart. Watson though was too much as he went to win by just 0.947 of a second over Taylor in his Northwest Restoration/Zimmer’s Service Center/Racecar Fabrication/Hoosier Tire-sponsored #92. Like Swartzlander, Watson’s victory was the 12th of his career at Sharon.

Jeff Johnson dropped to third over Greg Johnson and Shawn Shingledecker. Kugel, Clayton Kennedy, Mike Kinney, Andy Buckley, and Sullivan completed the top 10. After four top five finishes to start the season, Alan Dellinger dropped from the event and was scored in 18th, but still was able to maintain his point lead. Kinney and Taylor picked up heat race victories over the 20-car field.

The 2013 season has been a major improvement for Ryan Fraley. So much so that he already has the first two wins of his career in the first five weeks of competition and is just two points out of the lead! Saturday’s win came in the 15-lap HTMA/Precise Racing Products Econo Mod feature.

“Brandon Blackshear has really helped me out to get this car running,” revealed the 24-year-old Wheatland, Pa. racer. “Don (Blackshear) sat down with us this week and told us different things we needed to look at and it’s been helping out. I have to thank my family, the Blackshears, Joel from Close Racing Supply, and everyone else that gives me a hand on this race car.”

Fraley survived five cautions and a lengthy delay of nearly 25 minutes when the cars of Dennis Dellinger, Jr. and Alan Atkinson got tangled up and hooked together on the opening lap. Fraley started from the pole and held off outside pole-sitter and point leader Steve Burns, Jr. for the duration to win by just 0.313 of a second in his Sunset Lanes/Eagle Soft Tees/Tri-State Trailer Sales/Blackshear Racing Engines-sponsored #12.
Malta ― May 10, 2013 ― Modified driver Marc Johnson was fast from the moment he stepped onto Albany Saratoga Speedway soil on Friday. Johnson won his qualifying event after a solid battle with Matt Delorenzo and that same duo would entertain the crowd again during the 35 lap Modified feature event ― with Johnson owning both events when the checkered flag waved. At the start of the event it was all Mike Perrotte. The veteran driver showed the field around until shortly before the halfway mark when Marc Johnson, who started the event from the fourth row, continued his dominance and stole the race lead from Perrotte. And wherever Johnson went, Delorenzo continued to follow with the top three ―Johnson, Delorenzo and Brett Hearn putting on a fantastic show as they dealt with heavy bouts of lapped traffic. Johnson secured his first win of the 2013 race season. Delorenzo, Hearn, Perrotte and Jeremy Wilder rounded out the top five. The 25 lap Sowle Tractor Trailer Repair sponsored Sportsman feature event was paying $1,100 to the race winner so many were anxious to get to the front of the field when the green flag was let go. Leo Sousie took the lead from the start but it wouldn’t last long before Frank Hoard III took command. Hoard dominated and ran the high side of the 4/10 mile oval. Coming on five to go the top-five were tight and they were starting to come upon some heavy lap traffic when the caution came out tightening everything up. On the restart Mike Tholin was all over Eric Mack for the runner up slot ― and then he set his sights on the race leader. With one lap remaining Tholin took over the lead. “Awesome ― I can’t believe I did it on the last lap ― I’ve never done that before, that is awesome, awesome, great car,” said a very excited Tholin during post-race ceremonies. Hoard held on for second place while Scott Duell, Eric Mack and Jon Miller all had impressive runs to round out the top five. Connor Cleveland was back in victory lane when the 15 lap Novice Sportsman concluded. Cleveland started eighth on the field and wasted little time getting to the front ― securing the race lead from Shannon Donnelly on the third circuit. It was Cleveland’s second win in the newly formed division. Last week’s novice victor, Jack Bublak followed with Jesse Edwards, Doug Hancock and Chris Murray rounding out the top five. Announcer Dan Martin did a rundown of Tremont’s stats which are extremely impressive; 58 wins and 12 point championships [67 wins at Devils Bowl] and let’s not forget Tremont’s success at AS’s sister speedway, Lebanon Valley, where he is the winningest driver with 119 big block and 10 small block wins plus 13 championship titles… Brandon Emigh missed out on a qualifying position in his Pro Stock qualifying event due to a left front flat tire… Shea Montgomery was a newbee at the speedway in the Sportsman division. Montgomery easily qualified during his qualifying event… nice run by modified rookie Brian Gleason, he owned his qualifying until the later stages after a good battle with Marc Johnson who went on to pick up the victory… at 7:50 p.m. management said the rain was on the way sooner than expected… the sportsman consolation events had the ‘win it and you’re in it’ theme so several drivers didn’t make the main event… at 8:00 all events but the features were in the record books… only one caution event throughout all of that racing, impressive… unfortunately that caution was for Jack Swinton who hit the wall pretty hard and broke something in the rear of his automobile… the Sportsman division was the first to get to run their feature event… early into the modified feature event Ronnie Johnson took a horrible ride down the backstretch with a violent series of barrel rolls in his Palmer’s Service automobile. Johnson. Johnson got out of the car after the incident but was put into the ambulance as a precaution. Race promoter Lyle DeVore reported on Saturday that Johnson was doing ok but his car was not… [praying for rain for Johnson on Saturday since he will be quite sore]… management got all racing completed without a drop of rain… management apologies to Marc Johnson, Connor Cleveland, first AS career winner Kenny Martin, Randy Miller and Todd Goldstein for not being able to celebrate their victories with announcer Mike Warren since the program was rushed along…

Canandaigua, NY – May 11, 2013 – Tom Skibinski, Canandaigua Motorsports Park PR (585-350-8997) Two-time defending points champion Matt Sheppard from Waterloo, NY returned to winning form Saturday night at Canandaigua Motorsports Park, charging from 18th to grab the lead from Danny Johnson with just four laps left and capture the thrilling Team Tiremasters Big-Block Modified victory. Dave Marcuccilli (SafetyAwareness Solutions Sportsman), Nick Cooper (Castner Performance 305 Sprint), Derek Excell (Pure Stock) and Andrew Jacobson (Community Car Care of Waterloo New Legends Sportsman) each triumphed in their caution-free features while Mike Welch remained undefeated following his fourth straight Parts Plus Street Stock win on Champion Power Equipment ‘Mothers of Racing’ Night at the popular Ontario County Fairgrounds oval. Sheppard emerged as the first repeat Big-Block winner after four events, at the same time keeping Johnson winless with a bold maneuver that sent sparks flying in a late-race pass under the starter’s stand in front of the grandstand crowd. “I knew it was going to be interesting at the end,” smiled Sheppard, 30, with sights set clearly on a fourth track title in the past five years at CMP for car owner Jeff Brownell and the no. 9s F.X. Caprara Car Co.-Xtreme Lubricants/Bicknell Team. “But with just a couple laps left sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do to get (victory lane).” “Danny and I were side-by-side going into turn three and there were two lapped cars running side-by-side right in front of us. So we were both kind of trapped there. As far as I knew Danny was still behind the lapped car in three and I couldn’t see the lapped car coming out of four so I started easing around the #19 (Justin Wright). Then I felt (Danny) there on my right-rear quarter-panel at the same time,” Sheppard explained. Johnson settled for second ahead of Justin Haers, Australian Peter Britten, Gary Tomkins and Jimmy Phelps, with this year’s only other feature winners Alan Johnson and Billy Dunn next in line after 35 laps. Starting 13th in the 25-car feature field, Johnson needed just nine times around the ultra-fast half-miler to bolt past early leader Mike O’Brien. A pair of yellow flags for the slowing mounts of Dave Rauscher and Marcus Dinkins on lap 12 brought Johnson back to the field and at the halfway mark Sheppard had cracked the front-five. ‘Super Matt’ disposed of third-place runner Tomkins on lap 22 and overtook Haers for the runner-up spot two lap later. The two leaders pulled away from the pack before Sheppard reeled in Johnson with five to go and finally ducked under DJ for the final exchange as the lapped counter clicked off 32 and their sheet metal met. “This car has been really good here the last three weeks,” noted Sheppard, after logging his 29th career Big-Block win in wine country; five came last season. “It was really awesome tonight and so was the track.

You know it was racy anytime you can start 18th and get to the front. You know you had a good car and a good race track.”

Similar to Sheppard’s magnificent march to the front, Marcuccilli needed nearly the entire distance to claim victory in the 25-lap Sportsman nightcap. Falling into 15th on the 25-car starting grid, the Cayuga, NY chauffeur reached fifth-place by lap 13 and methodically picked off the front-runners in convincing fashion aboard his potent no. m1 Mike Laird Construction-Stormin/Bicknell mount .

With a handful of laps to go, Marcuccilli swept past both race-long leader Jeff Davoli and Matt Guererri, while points leader Kevin Ridley closed to within three car-lengths at the stripe. Guererri, Canadian traveler A.J. Lewis and Greg Cool filled out the final top-five.

“Kevin and I had a real good race going, figured whoever got to the front first tonight was probably going to win it,” remarked Marcuccilli, who already matched last season’s win total after copping Canandaigua’s 2013 opener on April 5. “I got ahead there and was able to stay in front of him.”

“It was awesome behind the wheel tonight, we finally got the car figured out after struggling for a couple weeks. Its still not easy getting to the front at this place, always a lot of good cars in front of us — usually most of the field. I expected maybe a top-5 tonight but not a win going green to checkers. 25 laps without a caution was pretty cool,” Marcuccilli added.

Legends Sportsman grad Davoli jumped out from his outside pole-position start and held a seemingly comfortable advantage most of the way. Yet the final 10 laps when it counted most it was the open-wheel veterans showing the way as Marcuccilli moved ahead for good on lap 20 and 18th-place starter Ridley followed in his tire tracks the next circuit.

Canandaigua Motorsports Park returns to action on Saturday, May 18, with a solid six-star show featuring the Team Tiremasters Big-Block Modified, Safety Awareness Solutions Sportsman, Castner Performance 305 Sprint Car, Parts Plus Street Stock, Pure Stock and Community Car Care of Waterloo New Legends Sportsman racing plus slam bang $1,000-to-win Demolition Derby.
FULTON, NY – MAY 11, 2013 (By Dave Medler) – During the week Chad Phelps made a call to Billy Colton at Troyer looking for advice on car setup. That advice paid off as Phelps took the big 35 lap Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modified win on Saturday night at the Fulton Speedway. On lap17, Phelps shot from third to the lead, and then outran Robbie Bellinger in the late stages for the popular win. Other winners on WOLF 105.1 New Country night were, Ron Davis III, SUNY Canton Sportsman, Alan Fink, NAPA Late Models, Gary Hoppins, E&V Energy Novice Sportsman, Skip DeGroff, Four Cylinder Stocks and Jeff Isabell Jr., Mod Lites. Dale Planck and Joe August Jr. brought the hungry Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modified feature down to the green with Planck grabbing the top-spot in the 35 lap main. On lap 5, Planck running the bottom held a slight lead over August who was running the top of the speedway. Within striking distance of the top-two was Jim Witko and Chad Phelps making it a good four-car battle at the front. One lap later on lap 6, August, who didn’t even know if he’d be back at the speedway after engine problems the week before powered by Planck to be scored the new leader. Between lap 6 and lap 8 August and Planck would swap the lead back and forth till August could open a few car length advantage. With 10 laps showing on the scoring tower you could of almost thrown a blanket over August, Planck, Witko and Chris Hile as they used every inch of the speedway looking for any advantage. The whole complexion of the race changed on the lap 17 when Chad Phelps found wicked bite on the bottom of the speedway blasting from third and into the lead. A quick caution on lap 21 gave the field a chance to catch their breath after hot battles all over the speedway. The restart would line up Phelps, August, Chuck Bower, Planck, Hile, Witko, Billy Decker and Rob Bellinger. With 10 laps to go Phelps held onto a four-car advantage over Bower while August, Hile and Bellinger were in a tight fight for third through fifth. Over the remaining laps Phelps looked to get quicker as he pulled away for the win by a half-a-straightaway over Bellinger. Hile, Dan Vauter who came on late and Billy Decker rounded out the top-five. After Phelps pulled his Haun Welding Supply/ Midstate Tree Service/ Ashley Lynn Winery/ Troyer/ No.X in victory lane he talked about his win. ” It was unbelievable. I got to give hats off to Billy Colton (Troyer Race Cars), we were complete junk last week with this new car so we threw some stuff at it, let me tell you, it was way better than it was. I’m not like the professionals, sometimes we’re second rate as I sometimes like to say. The track had a lot of bite and that helped....

We have it pointed in the right direction and we were able to hold them off.”

“I don’t know how close those guys were, we had a decent starting spot that helped. You got to get that with these guys, it’s such a tough group we run with every week. It feels good to get this out of the way. Hopefully we did the right thing and are now going in the right direction.”

Chris Hile received the first American Racer Tire giveaway of the season for the Modifieds.

In the 20 lap SUNY Canton Sportsman feature, Gregg Kimball would lead the opening laps. The fastest car on the track was that of Ronnie Davis III who would dog Kimball for a number of laps before he used an outside power move to grab the lead on lap 9. Once out front, and as the laps clicked off nobody had anything for Davis as he drove away for the win. Gregg Kimball held onto second, Fonda Speedway invader Rocky Warner grabbed third, Jordan Bennett over came heat race problems to finish fourth and Tony Finch II finished fifth.

Beth Schneider received the first American Racer Tire give away for the season in the Sportsman.

In the 20 lap Mod Lite feature, Joe Isabell and Jeff Isabell Jr. swapped the lead back and forth in the late going with Jeff Isabell Jr. picking up the win. What made the win impressive was Isabell started dead last after heat race problems. Joe Isabell, Doug Williams, Jeremy Isabell and Alan Fink finished second through fifth.

Tickets Purchased Early for Wednesday, June 5, Event include FREE Fan Pit Pass ELBRIDGE, N. Y. – The biggest stars and cars will be on hand at Rolling Wheels Raceway Park Wednesday, June 5, for the first 2013 points race of the Super DIRTcar Series, the Hall of Fame 60. Formerly “All-Star Weekend,” the Hall of Fame 60 moves to Wednesday night for a mid-week classic, making room for a special primetime Dirt Motorsports Hall of Fame induction ceremony to begin 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 4. After winning All-Star Weekend events in 2010, 2011 and 2012, Big-Block Modified star Matt Sheppard, of Waterloo, N. Y., steered his 9s to three consecutive Super DIRTcar Series Championships. His performance was stellar at “The Fast Track” in 2012, but with strong competitors such as Brett Hearn and Stewart Friesen – both multiple-time winners of the VP Small Engine Fuels 200 during NAPA Auto Parts Super DIRT Week – hoping to challenge him in June, Sheppard will have his work cut out for him. “With such stout competition going into the first race of the Super DIRTcar Series points battle, there’s no telling which driver will cross the finish line first. All we can say for sure is that, when it comes to seeing action-packed racing, the fans always win at Rolling Wheels,” said Rolling Wheels General Manager Jeff Hachmann. “The best DIRTcar racers are gearing up to spend Wednesday at the Wheels for the Hall of Fame 60, and fans have the opportunity to meet them. Not only will the Hall of Fame inductees be present that night to meet fans and sign autographs, but those who act early can enter the competitor pits and meet the night’s racers at no extra cost.” Rolling Wheels Raceway Park continues to offer a FREE Fan Pit Pass with any ticket purchased early. Attendees can redeem their FREE Fan Pit Pass for a wristband after grandstand gates open at 5 p.m. and enter the pits at any time during the night. Additionally, this family-friendly event offers discounts for kids under 17, and children 9 and under are always FREE in general admission sections at Rolling Wheels. Joining the Super DIRTcar Series on “The Fast Track” are the Midstate Vintage Stock Car Club and the DIRTcar Sportsman Modified Series for it’s second feature after the Sunday, June 2, Cornwall opener. Adult general admission tickets are just $25, with general admission student tickets available for kids 10 to 17 available for just $10. General admission for children 9 and under is FREE! Reserved seats are also available at $29 each, regardless of patron age. Both general admission and reserved seat tickets, with the exception of FREE children’s tickets, are available for advance sale by visiting www.dirtcar.com/tickets or by calling the ticket hotline, (877) 395-8606. Just look around a race track, on peoples’ Facebook pages and chances are you will see peoples’ pets. They are more than just pets to us, they are family members. Not all animals are so lucky as they are abandoned, given up for financial reasons and other very sad stories. That’s why organizations like the Humane Association of CNY located in Liverpool, NY, play such a vital role in giving shelter, food and medical care but it comes with a cost. There are no big government grants to keep these places going, it’s through fundraisers and the generosity of people like you. The Brewerton and Fulton Speedways have seen the need and are proud to team with the Humane Association of CNY with two special nights. Brewerton Speedway will host the first night on Friday, May 17 with the Fulton Speedway hosting on Saturday June, 1st. On the designated nights not only can you meet some of our fury friends prior to the night’s racing, you can help in a variety of ways. They will be accepting monetary donations, gently used clean towels, blankets and comforters. There will also be a bin where you can give donations of canned cat and dog food. They suggest Friskies for cats and Pedigree for dogs as they try to stick to one brand as not to upset the animals’ stomachs. There will also be gift baskets for raffle with racing themes inside, gift certificates from local restaurants and even pet themed gift baskets for raffle. When it comes to a time of need there is no bigger family than the racing family. Let’s get behind our four-legged friends and help give them a chance at a better and happy future. Please visit http://thehumaneassociationofcny.org/ or call (315) 457-8762 to donate if you can’t make it to the speedway or even to adopt a pet to make your home their happy home. Any questions you might have about the new season please contact Cory Reed at (315) 668-6906 or cory@brewertonspeedway.com .
(By Mike Leone) Hartford, OH May 11, 2013 Sharon Speedway will look to string together another night of “Steel Valley Thunder” racing this Saturday night, May 11 on Speed Energy Night. It’ll be a six-division program of Governor Insurance Agency DIRTcar Big-Block Modifieds, Barris Supply RUSH Late Models, Summit Racing Equipment Modifieds, Gibson Insurance Agency Stock Cars, HTMA/Precise Racing Products Econo Mods, and the Deforest Used Parts Mini Stocks. Racing begins at 7 p.m. With Saturday being Mother’s Day Eve, Sharon will honor all moms with just $7 general admission! If you’re not a mom, bring a Speed Energy can to the gates Saturday and receive $3 off admission! Once again Saturday night, one lucky boy and girl under the age of 14 will win a bicycle or scooter thanks to King Bros. This promotion will continue throughout the 2013 season. The home-cooked kitchen special is country fried steak with mashed potatoes and vegetable. It’s been good to see solid car counts in the DIRTcar Big-Block Modifieds early in the season as there have been at least 18 cars each night. The competition has been strong. Jim Weller, Jr. put an end to the King dominance in the first two weeks and ended his own personal winless drought dating back nearly three years! Also look for Jimmy Weller III to be in action on Saturday night as he’ll try to do for the Weller Family what the Kings did the first two weeks. Weller, Jr. currently has a nine point lead on Rex King, while New Yorker Ricky Richner has climbed into the third spot in the Governor Insurance Agency Points. The Summit Racing Equipment Modified division has seemingly been putting on the best racing night in and night out. Already four different racers from three different states have claimed victories with Ohio’s Jeff Johnson and Joel Watson, New York’s Randy Hall, and Pennsylvania’s Alan Dellinger. While Dellinger has opened up a 21-point advantage after reuniting with the Jim White Family, the competition is tight behind him. Mike Kinney and Joe Gabrielson are tied for second with Shawn Shingledecker one point behind, and only eight more points back is Clayton Kennedy. It won’t be long until these four racers are in victory lane themselves. Could this be the week 12-year-old Jacob Eucker makes history at Sharon Speedway to become the youngest winner in the 84-year history of Sharon Speedway? He’s led laps all four weeks to date, but has come up just shy so far. It looks like Jeremy Double has replaced the Blackshear Brothers, who have moved on from the division, as the driver to beat in the HTMA/Precise Racing Products Econo Mods with two wins in the first four shows to go along with the first two wins of his career last season. April 27 winner Steve Burns, Jr. has the point lead by four over April 20 winner Ryan Fraley, Double, and Eucker. Pits open at 4 p.m. Saturday with grandstands at 5 and heat races slated...
