LOVELOCK, Nev. (March 1) – A dozen dates for IMCA Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods are on the schedule this season at Lovelock Speedway. A test and tune session will be held March 23 with the first point race on April 13. Ten Saturday races and another on a Friday follow before championship night Sept. 28. “We have had a sportmod class using older modified chassis since 2008 that has evolved toward the IMCA rules,” explained promoter Barbara Macedo. “There was a lot of discussion about sanctioning with IMCA, then talks with track officials at Fallon.” Rattlesnake Raceway announced in January that it would add the division in 2013. “The sportmod class here started as an inexpensive way for drivers to race. Some drivers said it cost less to race than a hobby stock,” Macedo said. “A lot of our younger drivers are very interested in the Northern SportMods. It’s just a good class for them to get into.” IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modifieds have run on the ¼-mile clay oval at Lovelock since 2008. That division will also be in action for IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing National, Allstar Performance State and local track points, as well as Larry Shaw Racing Western Region points, on the same nights as the SportMods.
“We have had a sportmod class using older modified chassis since 2008 that has evolved toward the IMCA rules,” explained promoter Barbara Macedo. “There was a lot of discussion about sanctioning with IMCA, then talks with track officials at Fallon.”

Rattlesnake Raceway announced in January that it would add the division in 2013.

“The sportmod class here started as an inexpensive way for drivers to race. Some drivers said it cost less to race than a hobby stock,” Macedo said. “A lot of our younger drivers are very interested in the Northern SportMods. It’s just a good class for them to get into.”

IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modifieds have run on the ¼-mile clay oval at Lovelock since 2008. That division will also be in action for IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing National, Allstar Performance State and local track points, as well as Larry Shaw Racing Western Region points, on the same nights as the SportMods.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Bakersfield Speedway is excited to announce a new partnership for the 2013 race season as opening night of the new season is just around the corner. Motor City Buick/GMC, California’s largest volume Buick/GMC dealer, has signed on at the speedway as official division sponsor and engine supplier of the IMCA-sanctioned Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods. Motor City Buick/GMC general manager John Pitre stated “Motor City is excited to partner with the Bakersfield Speedway and to be the official sponsor of the IMCA Northern SportMod division. And with that … the SportMods’ engine of choice is the GM 602 crate engine which we have available right here at Motor City.” The Northern SportMod class is one of the fastest growing divisions at the Speedway in the last two years. Bakersfield Speedway was also the first track in the Western United States to sanction the division with IMCA. Since then, more tracks have followed Bakersfield Speedway’s lead and added the division to their event schedule. Motor City’s involvement doesn’t stop with just sponsoring the division. They will add additional money to all 22 finishing positions of the main event at each SportMod event in 2013. And to not stop there, an extra bonus will be offered to the top three finishers if their SportMod is powered by the GM 602 crate motor purchased from Motor City Buick/GMC. “I can’t express how excited I am to be partnering with Motor City. They are passionate about racing and it show’s just how much with what they are offering to the racers this season. Sponsoring the division, adding to all spots in the purse and a bonus for running their motor is a win-win for everybody out here,” said Bakersfield Speedway owner Scott Schweitzer. The 2013 race season kicks into gear at the “West’s Fastest High Banked Clay Oval” on Saturday night, March 2. The 32-event season concludes with the running of the 28th annual Budweiser Nationals Oct. 11-12. The Motor City GMC SportMods make the season debut on March 9 and will do battle 16 times throughout the 2013 season.
FALLON, Nev. (Feb. 4) – Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods have found their first Nevada home at Rattlesnake Raceway. The division will be paired with IMCA Modifieds on Friday and Saturday race programs at Fallon. Opening night is April 6, with point races scheduled every other week through Sept. 21. Northern SportMods will replace another open wheeled class that had run with a 318 cubic inch engine and flat top pistons. “I’m pretty tickled. The Northern SportMods are going to be a good addition,” said Chris Lumsden, track promoter and president of the Lahonton Auto Racing Association. “They’re a good stepping stone to the Modified, plus it gives an outlet for a lot of older Modifieds to be sold to other drivers and used.” Lumsden will compete in the class himself and noted that several local hobby stock drivers were already building SportMods as well. The track is in the process of moving lights from the infield to outside the ¼-mile high-banked dirt oval, to accommodate mud bogs and go-kart races. Officials also hope to expand grandstand seating before opening night. Rattlesnake will need plenty of seating for high-profile events such as the $1,000 to win Evenson Law Office Iron Man Challenge Series for IMCA Modifieds, scheduled for July 3 and 4. Rattlesnake has sanctioned its Modified division with IMCA since 1999. Points earned in that division at Fallon figure toward Larry Shaw Racing Western Region standings. In addition to local track points, IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing National and Allstar Performance State points will be awarded to Modified and SportMod drivers at Rattlesnake. 30 IMCA Bill Martin | Director of Public Relations 1800 West D Street | Vinton, IA 52349 Ofc: 319-472-2201 | Ext. 213 www.imca.com | bmartin@imca.com

OSHKOSH, Wis. (Feb. 1) – IMCA Modifieds return to weekly race programs at Oshkosh Speedzone this season. First point races for both the Modifieds and Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods will be Friday, April 26. Promoters Jeff Lemiesz and Larry Stratton noted that sanctioning would make Oshkosh competitors eligible for IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing National, Belleville Motorsports North Central Region and local track point fund shares and contingency awards. Improving on already strong car count numbers was another factor in the decision to sanction. “We talked to many drivers and to our surprise, they encouraged us to sanction even though we had a great car count, one of the highest in the nation, and did follow the IMCA rule package,” Lemiesz said. “It was stated by several drivers that it (sanctioning) takes the Speedzone out of the good guy-bad guy equations. It also will provide equality on rules and enforcements with IMCA.” “Larry and I looked at the Modified drivers we had and out of our top 20, there were 16 who had an IMCA license in 2012,” he added. “We also felt that by sanctioning with IMCA there would not be a great drop off but instead may bring even more cars to the Speedzone. We have proven to we are a viable track and would be a great addition to IMCA and the North Central Region.” The Speedzone is located on the Sunnyview Expo Center Fairgrounds. Modifieds at Oshkosh had been sanctioned by IMCA at the former Sunnyview Speedzone Raceway from 1999-2001. Northern SportMods were added to weekly cards last year.

Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods will race every other Saturday at Fort Morgan. Opening night is April 7, with the final point race set for Sept. 21. “We have run a sportmod class with rules similar to IMCA’s for five seasons,” promoter Butch Speicher said. “One of the best things about this division is that guys can buy and race an older Modified, and they’ll be able to come here if they want to run for points.” Speicher anticipates sharing a number of drivers from Phillips County Raceway in Holyoke and tracks in western Nebraska already running the IMCA division. “We will have one season for all drivers to transition to the IMCA rules. We had quite a few IMCA legal cars running here last year,” he said. Only IMCA legal and licensed drivers will receive Speedway Motors Weekly Racing National and Allstar Performance State points.
VINTON, Iowa – While a Jan. 1, 2016 deadline was announced, IMCA is implementing plans for drivers competing with the 602 crate engine to get required IMCA multi-lock seals on their engine. The seal will be required for all IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock, Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod and Smiley’s Racing Chassis Southern SportMod drivers with crate engines, effective in 2016. “Some GM crate engine dealers are already putting the seals on new 602 engines they are selling,” said IMCA Vice President of Operations Brett Root. “Used engines will have to be inspected, recertified and resealed. That’s going to be a work in progress because of the number of 602 engines already in use.” Dates to inspect, recertify and reseal will be scheduled, at events such as the IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals. IMCA is also looking into having endorsed inspectors to help speed the process. “Some of the inspection is visual but a lot of it is hands-on,” noted Root. “We want to be confident and know that these engines have not been tampered with. Lou DeVries is our primary source at this point in time. I encourage all IMCA racers with a crate engine to start thinking about this. We’re very serious about maintaining the crate engine program with legal GM 602 engines. The cheaters will be weeded out or caught.”

VINTON, Iowa (Oct. 9) – It’s getting more difficult, but Keith White found another way to race his way into the IMCA record book. From Little River Academy, Texas, White won the 2012 national Modified championship and became the first IMCA driver to earn national crowns in three different divisions, while extending his career record to seven. Also a five-time Southern SportMod national champ and the 2011 Stock Car king, White won 24 features. He got 35 bonus points for track titles at Kennedale Speedway Park and Heart O’ Texas Speedway, besting David Murray Jr. of Oberlin, Kan., by a 1,228-1,222 margin for this year’s Modified title. Joining White as 2012 national champions were Jason Howell of Azle, Texas, in the IMCA Sprint Cars; Brandon Czarapata of Appleton, Wis., in the IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars; Shannon Anderson of Urbandale, Iowa, in the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks; Jesse Sobbing of Glenwood, Iowa, in the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods; Dean Abbey of Waco, Texas, in the Smiley’s Racing Chassis Southern SportMods; and Cameron Meyer of Pierce, Neb., in the Mach-1 Sport Compacts. Anderson became a four-time national champion while Sobbing and Abbey both ruled their respective divisions for the second time. Howell, Czarapata and Meyer are all first-time kings. Howell won 11 features and paced point standings for the winged division at Mountain Creek Speedway. Czarapata was a 24-time feature winner and earned the maximum 20 bonus points for track titles at Luxemburg Speedway and Seymour Speedway, edging Mike Nichols of Harlan, Iowa, 1,234-1,229 for the Stock Car crown. Also champion from 2008-2010, Anderson won 32 Hobby Stock features. Thirty-nine bonus points for track titles at the Iowa State Fairgrounds Speedway and Shelby County Speedway put him one point ahead of 2011 champ Devin Smith of Lake City, Iowa, in this season’s title chase. Sobbing stacked bonuses from two of his three local track titles on top of an already perfect 1,200 point total after winning a division record 39 Northern SportMod main events. His first national championship campaign was in 2009. Abbey repeated atop the Southern SportMod standings with 21 feature wins and track championships at Kennedale and at Boyd Raceway. Runner-up Sid Kiphen of Gatesville, Texas, finished just three points back. Meyer’s 2012 resume boasts 34 feature wins and track championships at Riviera Raceway, U.S. 30 Speedway and Boone County Raceway. White, Czarapata, Anderson and Meyer were also Allstar Performance State champions; White repeated as champion of the Texas Lone Star Series for Modifieds. Modified regional champions were White, for the fourth straight time in the BillsBuilt South Central Region; Murray’s whose career ninth title came in the Jet Racing Central Region; Jimmy Gustin of Marshalltown, Iowa, a first-time title winner in the Belleville Motorsports North Central Region; Kevan Cook of Constantia, N.Y., for the third time in the Eastern Region; and Zane DeVilbiss of Farmington, N.M., for the third straight season in the Larry Shaw Racing Western Region.
VINTON, Iowa (Oct. 1) – The crate engine option for Modifieds and suspension issues for Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods will generate the most buzz about 2013 rules for the two divisions announced today by IMCA. The GM 604 crate engine has a maximum 6,400 rev limit and must be used with GM seal bolts and the IMCA Cable-Lok system to prevent tampering. A spoiler with a maximum height of three inches can be used in conjunction with the crate but is not mandatory. IMCA will no longer permit shoulder harnesses to be attached to rear frame rails in any division. Harnesses must be attached to the main roll cage. Drivers in all four divisions (Modified, Northern and Southern SportMod, and Hobby Stock) with the crate engine option will be required to identify their cars as such with the word CRATE at least two inches tall on both front roof posts. Bulb-type shocks will not be allowed in the Northern SportMods, which also have a maximum 2-1/8-inch outside diameter shock body requirement. Also new is a maximum 13-inch free height requirement for all four springs. “We have witnessed the evolution of taller springs in use in the Northern SportMods,” IMCA Vice President of Operations Brett Root said. “We’re going to continue to address these types of issues in the Northern SportMods. The shock and suspension technology is creeping toward a Modified. We suggest those who want that type of suspension consider an IMCA Modified in the near future.” Northern SportMod drivers with claim engines will also be allowed to use GM 10105123 and 10066034-numbered engine blocks. More duplication of wording for rules in effect for both Modifieds and for Northern SportMods will be evident next season. That is aimed at making enforcement and tech inspection easier. 2013 rules for IMCA Modifieds and Northern SportMods specify: •SA 2000 helmets will not be allowed in any IMCA division in 2013. SA 2005 or SA 2010 helmets will be required for use in sanctioned competition. •Cables or tethers cannot be used as substitutes for chain to limit rear suspension. Chain must be used and must be mounted properly in the Modified division only. •Exhaust rules were clarified and will specify that maximum collector length and turndown dimensions be the same. “We have gone through a number of exotic exhaust issues,” explained Root. “We felt it was important to address them in both divisions, especially for Modifieds because of the new crate engine option.” *Wording was also changed to clarify the rule regarding nose pieces. Complete rules for both divisions are now posted on the www.imca.com website.

VINTON, Iowa (Sept. 28) – 2013 season rules for both the IMCA Modified and Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod divisions will be released Monday, Oct. 1. Rules will be posted on the IMCA website. “The biggest addition to the Modified rules for next season will be the GM 604 crate engine option, which we announced in August,” stated IMCA Vice President of Operations Brett Root. “Specifics regarding that engine and associated rules, such as spoiler height, will be released next Monday.” “We anticipate that the crate engine option for Modifieds will be the primary subject of discussion throughout what we consider our off-season,” he added. Both shock and spring issues were specifically addressed in the Northern SportMod division. “There are a lot of similarities between the cars and rules in the two divisions. The most identifiable difference is drivetrain and suspension,” said Root. “I recommend that current and future Northern SportMod drivers pay attention to the website on Monday.” IMCA’s executive committee met this week and the 2013 Modified and Northern SportMod rules are being finalized this afternoon (Friday). One or two other divisional rules will be released each week in October; as many as are completed will be published in the October newsletter. “Our goal is to have 2013 rules for all divisions completed by Nov. 1,” Root said. “Drivers should note that they are still running under 2012 rules and will do so through the end of the season. New rules do not go into effect until Jan. 1, 2013.”
